The small tetrapod Candelaria barbouri, from the Middle Triassic of southern Brazil, is the first example of an owenettid procolophonoid outside Africa and Madagascar. Candelaria barbouri was originally described as a primitive procolophonid; however, a re–examination of the holotype, as well as new material, reveals that C. barbouri is in fact the youngest member of the Owenettidae, extending the chronological range of the group by more than 10 million years. The recognition of C. barbouri as an owenettid points to a broader diversity and distribution for owenettids than hitherto thought. In addition, C. barbouri is the first member of the Owenettidae to exhibit temporal fenestrae, a discovery that draws attention to the significance of this feature in ‘anapsid’ reptiles.

This paper is a survey of Arecaceae family in Rio Grande do Sul state. We recognize 15 native species in this state (Bactris setosa, Butia catarinensis, B. eriospatha, B. exilata, B. lallemantii, B. odorata, B. paraguayensis, B. witeckii, B. yatay, Euterpe edulis, Geonoma gamiova, G. schottiana, Syagrus romanzoffiana, Trithrinax acanthocoma and T. brasiliensis). Three species were excluded from Rio Grande do Sul flora (Acrocomia aculeata, A. totai and Butia microspadix), three names were considered synonyms (Butia missionera, B. pulposa and B. quaraimana); Butia stolonifera was considered a doubtful specie. Two natural hybrids are recognized, one of them being described in this work (x Butyagrus alegretensis and × Butyagrus nabonnandii).

EnglishThe golden period of the discoveries about the Cactaceae family in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and Uruguay is analysed. Several new species were found by enthusiasts, mainly from German-Brazilian backgrounds, as well as by European immigrants who crossed the furthest corners of the region. portuguesE abordado o periodo aureo das descobertas de Cactaceae no Rio Grande do Sul e Uruguai.

The insect fauna knowledge of forest ecosystems have their importance in relation to damage caused by their different segments. The bioecology of the Oncideres cervina(Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in Ocotea puberula(Lauraceae) was studied in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. In 49 cut twigs were analyzed the cutoff frequency, the diameter of cut twigs and sections, twig length, posture incisions frequency, adult emergence, exit orifice size, length and volume of the larvae gallery of this species. The cut twigs period extends from February to March and this species is fit as thick cutter twigs. The incisions posture number is variable, but the highest concentration is found on sections 20 to 40 cm from the cut, with an average value of 11 incisions. Two hundred adults emerged from 27 twigs, with the most emergent on the first half of December. In order to complete its development, this species requires less wood volume if compared to other twig girdlers species.
