This study describes and compares phytoplankton composition and richness at the mouths of the Gravatai, Sinos, Cai, and Jacui rivers during the four seasons of the year. The investigation was based on bimonthly sampling of subsurface water, from December/2000 to December/2001. The phytoplankton community of the four river mouths was composed by 470 species (including those unidentified), 135 genera, and nine taxonomic classes. Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae were the most representative classes in species number. High richness was probably associated with the presence of dams and swamps on the upper course of these rivers, and also with the wetlands of the Jacui Delta floodplains. Temperature and fluviometric level were the main factors determining seasonal composition and richness variation of the phytoplankton community.

Data on richness, density, diversity and distribution of dinoflagellates in aquatic habitats (open and closed lagoons, channels, reservoirs and wetlands) during high and low water periods are presented. The study was based on 23 point samples, located on the eastern (Lagoa do Casamento area) and western (Butiazal de Tapes area) shores of Laguna dos Patos, in 2003. Eleven taxa were identified; taxon distribution was more homogeneous during the high-water period. Durinskia baltica (Levander) Carty & Cox was the only taxon whose distribution was the same for both hydroperiods. Peridinium gatunense Nygaard was a high-water indicator species and P. umbonatum Stein was an indicator of habitats associated with the Butiazal de Tapes area. This area had higher Dinophyceae diversity than the Lagoa do Casamento area, regardless of hydroperiod, due to the higher diversity and specificity of aquatic habitats. Habitat type significantly (p <0.01) influenced richness, density and diversity of dinoflagellates, and density was significantly influenced (p <0.01) by hydroperiod. Cluster analysis showed that pH and water temperature were the abiotic variables that had greater influence on the dinoflagellate populations in this study.

- Fort.)Hust., A. lanceolata (Breb.)Grun. var. lanceolata, Cocconeis placentula Ehr., Cyclotella meneghiniana Kutz., Cymbella minuta Hilse ex Rabh., Aulacosira distans (Ehr.) Sim., Navicula mutica Kutz., Surirella robusta Ehr. var. splendida (Ehr.)

Water quality in lotic and lentic systems is greatly influenced by the land use in the adjacent areas. This study was conducted in order to assess whether different degrees of preservation of riparian forest (from well preserved with 30m wide up to degraded with < 5 m wide) influence potamoplankton community structure. The study was conducted in three streams in the upper region of the Rio dos Sinos basin, at four sampling sites, with different width of the forest. Samplings were gathered for abiotic and biological analysis in winter (August 2010) and summer (January/February 2011). The analysis of environmental and biotic variables indicated that seasonality was the main determinant of biomass patterns, regardless of the width of riparian vegetation. The potamoplankton community of the studied streams responded to environmental conditions, although lack of significant difference among the different degrees of riparian vegetation preservation has been observed. Increasing trends on biomass, richness and diversity of species, and higher concentrations of total phosphorus and nitrogen in the non-preserved areas might indicate that the different gradients of preservation of riparian vegetation are related with the water quality in subtropical streams and consequently with the potamoplankton structure.
