Impacts of ERP systems on the integrated‐interaction performance of manufacturing and marketing

Li-Ling Hsu; Minder Chen

Interactions between manufacturing and marketing departments often determine the competitiveness and profitability of a firm. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems address integration issues of business functions; and benefits contributed by ERP implementation found in the literature are similar to those achieved through the integration of manufacturing and marketing functions. Uses a research model based on contingency theory and socio‐technical theory to study the effects of ERP implementation on marketing and manufacturing integration. A study of four companies in the electronic industry shows that internal organizational and external factors affect the interaction between manufacturing and marketing and results in performance improvement. Provides a new perspective of the factors that impact the effectiveness of ERP systems.

SCM system effects on performance for interaction between suppliers and buyers

Li-Ling Hsu

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the impacts of supply chain management (SCM) benefits on the interactive performance between supply chain members.Design/methodology/approach – The contingency theory and socio‐technical theory were applied in the construction of the research model. Four constructs were adopted for the development of the research model: contingency factors, interaction process, interactive performance, and SCM system benefits.Findings – To respond to the challenges in global markets, an increasing number of enterprises strive for better profits by working closely with suppliers. As the interaction increases, the buyer‐seller relationship changes accordingly.Research limitations/implications – Empirical studies require further analysis and suggestions were also made for further explication.Practical implications – The interaction between the manufacturing and marketing departments is a determinant for the firms competitive advantages.Originality/value – Interviews with six...

Understanding the critical factors effect user satisfaction and impact of ERP through innovation of diffusion theory

Li-Ling Hsu; Robert S. Q. Lai; Yu Te Weng

In the past few years, the benefits of ERP systems have appealed not only to large firms but also to small- and medium-sized firms. The samples come from 504, the winners of outstanding award given by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) in Taiwan, R.O.C. Valid questionnaires of this research have 130 copies and it has return of 26%. This study concludes three main results by implementing ERP system: user participation and observability have strong significance on user satisfaction; user satisfaction has strong significance on individual performance; individual performance has been evaluated as positive significance on organisational performance. On the whole, most of the hypotheses were supported through EQS statistical analysis. We believe that the successful implementation of ERP system within firms will play a significant role and be associated with the competitive advantages in innovative age. Implications of these results for practice and research are provided.

The longitudinal literature review on the interaction between manufacturing and marketing: a multidimensional content analysis

Li-Ling Hsu; Tsong-Ming Lin

This study has analysed the related empirical studies from the publications validated by ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) from 1980 to 2003. The study had acquired some results: the current trend is toward being customer-driven within two departmental issues; the marketing and manufacturing conflict has gradually focused on tactical and strategic levels; organisations have regarded the two departmental conflicts as constructive at present; the internal and external situation variables cannot be ignored; and much of the earlier related studies adopted traditional industries as sampling sources, however the high-tech industry has currently become the major survey target.

The adoption and implementation of Projects-ABCDE (MOEA) – based on grounded and TAM theory

Li-Ling Hsu

The study presented here is based on the authors experiences during 1999–2003 as a member of Projects-ABCDE launched by DOIT, MOEA in Taiwan. The purpose of this study is to extend the grounded theory and the technology acceptance model to examine the adoption and implementation of SCM systems for firms involved in the Projects-ABCDE.

The IT effects on competitiveness for interaction between manufacturing and marketing: six Taiwan cases

Li-Ling Hsu

This study is to explore the impact of information technology (IT) on the interaction between manufacturing and marketing. Literature reviews are initially conducted to understand the interfunctional goal gap and activity conflict that exist between the two departments which invariably constitute achievement on corporate competitiveness. The application dimension of IT function is introduced as a useful tool in reducing the degree of interfunctional gap through advanced IT which in turn will reduce the conflict on the activity level. Thus, the ultimate end might lead to positive effects on corporate competitiveness. In this paper, we discuss the interaction of manufacturing and marketing departments and the resulting capacity of IT in six firms, located in the HsinChu Science‐Based Industrial Park (HSIP) in Taiwan. HSIP is referred to as Taiwan’s Silicon Valley. This study’s methodology is based on a case study. Deep analysis of the six cases leads to ten hypotheses.

Factors that impact on the acceptance and performance of ERP system: multiple case studies in Taiwan

Li-Ling Hsu; Pei Chun Lin; Chin Tsang Ho; Je Ren Pan

With the popularisation of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions, software applications have developed to help managers implement ERP system in business activities such as inventory control, order tracking, customer service, finance and human resources. This study uses multiple case studies as a research method to investigate the influence of enterprise contingency factors on ERP system acceptance and performance based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This study selects four companies from the semiconductor and steel industries as case studies for interview. The research results demonstrate that contingency factors are positively associated with the introduction and acceptance of ERP system; furthermore contingency factors are positively associated with ERP system performance.

Measuring social influence, user perception, innovation attributes and user satisfaction in the enterprise resource planning context

Li-Ling Hsu; Jason C.H. Chen; Chun Chi Weng

Over the recent years, the benefits of enterprise resource planning (ERP) system have appealed to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) rapidly. The samples come from 504 of the winners of outstanding SMEs award given by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan. Valid questionnaires have 163 copies and have a return of 32%. The study examines critical factors that affect user behavioural intentions to system adoption and user satisfaction as the primary indicator for ERP success. The study results are as follows: (1) perceived usefulness has positive effect on user attitude to adopt; (2) user attitude to adopt has correlated to user behavioural intention to use positively; (3) perceived ease of use has correlated to perceived usefulness positively; (4) user attitude to adopt has correlated to user satisfaction positively; (5) user behavioural intention to use has correlated to user satisfaction positively and (6) social influence has been evaluated as correlated to critical mass positively. Most of hypotheses testing revealed supporting evidence for above relationships through structural equation modelling software (EQS) statistical analysis.

The ubiquitous service-oriented design of 3G/4G mobile commerce

Tung-Hsiang Chou; Li-Ling Hsu; Jason C.H. Chen

In the past, many telecommunications corporations implemented fewer functionalities on the internet, and most of these corporations used traditional development methods to implement telecom services for their customers. These behaviours provide lower Quality of Service (QoS) and monotonous added-value services to their customers, because these corporations cannot provide a suitably high quality mobile environment. Today, 3G technology can provide faster transmission rates and more diverse added-value services to the customers. This emerging mobile technology is helping to construct ubiquitous computing services. We present a service-oriented architecture framework that supports ubiquitous electronic services and adjusts telecommunications business processes.

E-commerce and its impact on wireless websites operational mechanisms

Li-Ling Hsu

The empirical study in this paper targeted leading Taiwanese software vendors. A total of 170 vendors of the Information Service Industry Association of Taiwan were selected as subjects of the analysis. The questionnaire was designed to investigate the impact of internal and external mechanisms on the goal setting of Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in e-commerce. Conclusions and managerial implications are provided that may assist SMEs in managing the m-commerce creation process.
