PURPOSE The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between overactive bladder syndrome and anxiety in older women. METHODS Of the 198 older women who were invited, 29 were excluded and 166 were then divided into two groups according to the Advanced Questionnaire of Overactive Bladder (OAB-V8): one group with overactive bladder symptoms (OAB-V8≥8) and the other without the symptoms of an overactive bladder (OAB-V8<8). The purpose was to conduct a frequency analysis and to investigate the relation of the social demographic data and anxiety in the two groups. The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) was used to evaluate the level of anxiety. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to determine the distribution of the data. The differences between the two groups for the continuous variables were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney U test, the differences for the categorical variables were analyzed by the Chi-Square test and the association between the continuous variables was analyzed by the Spearman Correlation test. The tests were two-tailed with a confidence level of 5%. RESULTS Overall, the frequency of an overactive bladder was present in 117 (70.5%) of the participants. The body mass index (BMI) of the group with overactive bladder symptoms was significantly higher than the BMI of those without these symptoms (p=0.001). A higher prevalence of mild, moderate and severe anxiety was observed among older women with overactive bladder symptoms. In addition, the overactive bladder symptoms group presented a positive low correlation with anxiety symptoms (r=0.345) and with BMI (r=0.281). There was a small correlation between BMI and anxiety symptoms (r=0.164). CONCLUSIONS Overactive bladder syndrome was prevalent among older women and the existence of these symptoms was linked to the presence of mild, moderate and/or severe anxiety symptoms.

Objective: To evaluate the association between overactive bladder syndrome (OBS) and depression among older women. Methods: One hundred sixty-nine older women answered 2 questionnaires: the Overactive Bladder (OAB-V8) and the Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale. Results: One hundred twenty-nine participants (76.3%) had symptoms of OBS (OAB-V8 ≥ 8 points). Among those with OBS, 42.6% exhibited mild or severe depression. A significant correlation was found between OBS and depression (r = 0.354; P = .001). Conclusions: A high prevalence rate of OBS was found in older women and a large portion of these women exhibited symptoms of mild and severe depression.

Introduction: Sarcopenia is considered a geriatric syndrome. Currently, there is no agreed definition of sarcopenia, so it is still a challenge to establish the actual prevalence of sarcopenia in the elderly in different races / ethnicities, especially in elderly quilombolas. Objective: Identify sarcopenia in the elderly living in maroon settlement using the algorithm proposed by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People. Patients and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with 70 participants (SD 65.58 ± 6.67 years) men and women living in the Quilombo communities called Malhadinha and Córrego Fundo, located in the city of Brejinho Nazaré-Tocantins-Brazil. For the diagnosis of sarcopenia we used the recommendations proposed by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People. Muscle mass was analyzed by the Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and the handgrip strength by hand dynamometer. The physical performance was analyzed using the walking speed test. We used the SF-36 questionnaire to analyze the quality of life. Results: We identified a prevalence of sarcopenia of 10% in the sample. The sarcopenic individuals were classified as low handgrip strength. All individuals in the sample had adequate physical performance. Conclusions: We conclude that the identification of the prevalence of sarcopenia in the elderly maroons was high. The algorithm proposed by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People had clinical applicability in the study population. Objective: This study aimed to perform a comparative analysis of obtained and predicted values of maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressure in healthy university students. Material and Methods: This was a quantitative, cross-sectional and comparative study including 12 students aged between 20 and 39 years, sedentary, and with body mass index between 18 and 29.9. The evaluation of respiratory muscle strength was performed using the manometer apparatus according to protocols established in the literature. Categorical variables were analyzed using descriptive statistics in single frequency. Data normality was checked by Shapiro-Wilk test and then Wilcoxon test was applied for both sexes separately. The findings were considered statistically significant at p<0.05. Results: Of the 12 university students, 8 (66.7%) were male and presented higher means for weight (74.04), height (1.75) and BMI (23.82) compared to females. The maximum inspiratory pressure values (p<0.109 female; p <0.351 male) and maximum expiratory pressure values (p <0.109 women; p <0.463 men) obtained were found to be lower than the predicted ones in both sexes. Conclusion: Although with no statistical significance, the values obtained were found to be lower than the predicted ones in university students. DESCRIPTORS Respiratory Muscles; Students; Lung.
