Proceedings of the first international workshop on Interoperability of heterogeneous information systems | 2005

Ontology integration approaches handle multiple different ontologies by identifying mappings between heterogeneous ontologies or by merging them into a single ontology. In this paper, existing ontology integration approaches are analyzed in order to identify the methods they are based on. The result of this paper is a survey of methods, which are used in ontology integration approaches, based on existing literature studies. We intent to use this information to (i) identify suitable tools for specific use cases and to (ii) ease the development of future tools easier since suitable methods are described.

Enterprise Systems like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are an important application area in higher education and getting more and more complex. Therefore problems occur from different perspectives and increase the difficulties in teaching. Existing software products cannot be used to teach specific technical aspects, like e.g. Web Services because it is still research in progress. This contribution reports about using a Federated ERP (FERP) system as an example for a Web Service-based ERP system to introduce aspects of Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) in higher education.

One common goal in the area of very large business applications (VLBAs) is integration to achieve lean and efficient processes. In addition, semantic integration using ontologies is the next step to interoperability. In this paper we describe an approach how ontologies could support VLBAs. To clarify the problems and challenges we explain semantic integration in the context of the FERP systems.

Within this contribution a framework of an Enterprise System Learning Environment (ELSE) is introduced on the basis of an Adaptive Learning Cycle. This framework integrates learning into Enterprise Systems, like e.g. ERP systems, under the consideration of the underlying business processes. The idea of this approach is to track, analyze and categorize the learner’s behavior during the learning process based on e.g. case studies, in order to generate more individual and adequate learning material and to measure the success or failure within the cycle. On the basis of these results the competence-building for learners like students, workers, etc. can be improved, in order to gain a higher knowledge level and a better understanding of ES in general.

Modern teaching methods in the field of applied computer science can not ignore the teaching of well know application and information systems, like enterprise systems, e.g. ERP-Systems. Therefore case studies are the most chosen way to introduce stepwise the handling of these systems. Effective teaching concepts have to improve this situation by consideration of pedagogical and didactical aspects which supports the individual learning process of each student. Our actual research considers actual needs of higher education e.g. present learning in a lab as well as e-learning courses supported by new methods in technology enhanced learning by recording student’s behaviour to guide him through the system. Therefore we introduce a concept using AUM and Enterprise Tomography to improve the teaching for Enterprise Systems.

The first workshop on Semantic Model Integration (SMI05) took place in Kaiserslautern on the 13th of April 2005. It was held in conjunction with the 3rd Conference Professional Knowledge Management and sponsored by the INTEROP NoE. The workshop was organized by the University of Oldenburg in the Department of Business Information Systems. The following text will give a short summary about the topics of this workshop and about the organization.

The 1st Workshop on Enterprise Systems in Higher Education (ESHE09) in conjunction with the 12th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2009) in Poznan, Poland is dealing with Enterprise Systems in form of Business Information Systems which are, as part of any business environment, becoming an integrated part of educational environments. Because of their potential of illustration, visualization and simulation of business and decision-making processes to students, the systems have potential for future pedagogic innovation within higher education. The main goal of this workshop is to bring researchers and practitioners together to explore the issues and challenges related to Enterprise Systems in Education and to show the actual activities in this area.
