Management of Knowledge Intensive Business Processes

Knowledge processes and business processes are linked together and should be regarded together, too. Business processes can be modeled and analyzed extensively with well known and established methods. The simple signs of static knowledge does not fulfill the requirements of a comprehensive and integrated approach of process-oriented knowledge management. The Knowledge Modeler Description Language KMDL is able to represent the creation, use and necessity of knowledge along common business processes. So KMDL can be used to formalize knowledge-intensive processes with a focus on certain knowledge-specific characteristics and to identify weak points in these processes. For computer-aided modeling and analyzing the tool K-Modeler is introduced.

The KMDL Knowledge Management Approach: Integrating Knowledge Conversions and Business Process Modeling

This paper shows the KMDL Knowledge Management Approach which is based on the SECI and ba model by Nonaka and Takeuchi and the KMDL Knowledge modeling language. The approach illustrates the creation of knowledge with the focus on the knowledge conversions by Nonaka and Takeuchi. Furthermore, it emphasizes the quality of knowledge being embodied in persons and creates a personalization and socialization strategy which integrates business process modeling, skill management and the selection of knowledge management systems. The paper describes the theoretical foundations of the approach and practical effects which have been seen in the use of this approach.

Approach for requirement oriented team building in industrial processes

This contribution presents an approach for requirement oriented team building in industrial processes like product development. This will be based on the knowledge modelling and description language (KMDL^(R)) that enables the modelling and analysis of knowledge intensive business processes. First the basic elements of the modelling technique are described, presenting the concept and the description language. Furthermore it is shown how the KMDL^(R) process models can be used as a basis for the team building component. Therefore, an algorithm was developed that is able to propose a team composition for a specific task by analyzing the knowledge and skills of the employees, which will be contrasted to the process requirements. This can be used as guidance for team building decisions.

Damit wird die Transparenz über das vorhandene Wissen im Unternehmen erhöht und der Ablauf wissensintensiver Geschäftsprozesse kann verbessert werden. Die semiformale Modellierungsmethode unterscheidet zwischen stillschweigendem, explizierbarem und explizitem Wissen und gestattet eine Analyse der Wissensverarbeitung in den einzelnen Prozessschritten und darauf aufbauend die Identifikation von Potenzialen für Verbesserungen. The so developed knowledge management applications are seldom integrated into the business processes within the organization. Therefore these knowledge management systems are rarely accepted permanently. The presented method for modeling and analyzing of knowledge intensive processes allows to identify the creation and use of knowledge within the business process and therefore allows to deduce suggestions for improvement. Thereby it becomes possible to integrate the knowledge of the employees into the value chain and achieve competitive advantage.

A Procedure Model for a sOA-based Integration of Enterprise systems

Enterprise systems are being transferred into a service-oriented architecture. In this article we present a procedure for the integration of enterprise systems. The procedure model starts with decomposition into Web services. This is followed by mapping redundant functions and assigning of the original source code to the Web services, which are orchestrated in the final step. Finally an example is given how to integrate an Enterprise Resource Planning System and an Enterprise Content Management System using the proposed procedure model.

The knowledge café - a knowledge management system and its application to hospitality and tourism.

SUMMARY Knowledge management is identified as a key success factor in most industries today. While data or information can be stored independently from people, knowledge is bound to people who use it for their interactions. The main goal of knowledge management is to improve the usage of knowledge in the enterprise. Knowledge management systems are not only organizational memory information systems. They also contain organizational standard procedures and a certain cultural attitude. A reference framework gives implementation hints mainly influenced by technical possibilities. The knowledge management system reference architecture contains layers of sources, repositories, taxonomy, services, applications and user interfaces. A software tool that largely corresponds to this reference framework is the Knowledge Café. Possible applications of this tool to the area of hospitality and tourism are described in this paper.

Collaborative Engineering Communities in Shipbuilding

Collaborative Engineering is a promising concept to increase the competitiveness of companies. Target of this paper is to describe the industrial application of this approach, considering shipbuilding as an example. Besides the engineering partners’ needs to collaborate during the product development phase, there are many other stakeholders who are interested in the product ship along its whole life cycle. Therefore the Concept of Collaborative Engineering is extended by introducing the idea of Communities. Requirements on Communities in Engineering are deduced. Based on this an architectural framework for Collaborative Engineering Communities is described. Concluding research topics which have to be discussed for practical realization are outlined.

Productivity evaluation of autonomous production objects

The LUPO projects objective is the rapid evaluation of autonomous technologies in production, assembling and logistics in order to make a solid statement about the best mix of centralized and decentralized control in enterprises. For this purpose a hybrid simulator is developed. The hybrid simulator consists of physical work-piece demonstrators and machine-center demonstrators which are equipped with various autonomous communication techniques. Processes can be quickly built, varied, simulated and analyzed by using a modern production management system. At the end of the project it should be possible to receive reliable results on the benefits of autonomous production objects within a week.

Wissensorientierte Modellierung im Lebenszyklus von Dienstleistungen

Fur die Modellierung von Dienstleistungen werden klassische Prozessmodellie-rungsansatze sowie Erweiterungen und neue Modellierungsverfahren diskutiert. Wissensbezogene Aspekte werden jedoch kaum berucksichtigt. Bei den gering standardisierten Dienstleistungen oder erklarungsbedurftigen Leistungen sind sie jedoch uberaus erfolgskritisch und oft die Grundlage fur das Entstehen einer Dienstleistung. Ziel des Beitrags ist, durch das Aufzeigen von Potenzialen und An-satzpunkten zu einer starkeren Berucksichtigung von wissensbezogenen Aspekten bei der Modellierung beizutragen. Dazu werden ein erweitertes Lebenszyklusmo-dell fur Dienstleistungen verwendet und von einem existierenden Modellierungs-ansatz ausgehend Potenziale fur die verschiedenen Phasen der Dienstleistung auf-gezeigt. Eine Fallstudie konkretisiert die Potenziale in der Dienstleistungsgestal-tung und -erbringung.
