BACKGROUND In spite of all the efforts, recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) and oral lichen planus (OLP) still have unexplained etiology. The role of anxiety, depression, and psychological stress in occurrence and intensity of symptoms in RAS and OLP patients has been investigated in this study. METHODS A total of 110 patients with RAS in the acute phase and 112 patients with OLP also in acute phase participated in this study. All patients filled out questionnaires related to the primary disease (RAS/OLP) after which they took the following psychological tests: Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ). RESULTS According to multiple regression analysis, in patients with RAS, the highest correlation was found between results of the pain intensity and STAI test (β= 0.66; p < 0.000). In the patients with OLP, the highest correlation was found between the level of hyperkeratosis and WCQ test (β = 0.53; P < 0.000), inflammation and results of BDI test (β = 0.33; P < 0.002), and results of dynia test and STAI test (β = 0.31; P < 0.004). CONCLUSIONS In this study, a high correlation between anxiety, depression, and psychological stress with symptoms of RAS and OLP has been observed.

The purpose of this study was to verify for various glass-ionomer cement (GIC) products whether the application of thermo-light curing on the initial curing material produces an increase in microhardness, and to determine whether this hardness varies depending on the depths of the GIC samples. The efficacy of various polymerization units on this additional hardening was also examined. The GIC samples were thermo-light cured for 60 seconds with three polymerization units. The Vickers microhardness was measured at three different depths: 2 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm. Analysis of variance and Newman-Keuls test showed statistically significant differences among tested samples for all three GIC groups (P < .001). The results of linear regression analysis showed a statistically significant relationship between the hardness of the material and the temperature for samples with depths of 2 mm (R = 0.78; P = .0028) and 3 mm (R = 0.59; P = .045). The findings of this study indicate that thermo-light curing of GIC with different polymerization units for 60 seconds during setting reaction increases the microhardness of the GICs at all depths tested and may increase resistance to mastication forces, which can be validated in future clinical studies.

Aim To evaluate, in vitro antimicrobial ability of two probiotic toothpastes (one containing Lactobacillus paracasei, other containing Lactobacillus acidophilus) and one toothpaste without probiotic separately, and in a combination with two different mouthrinses (one containing essential oils and the other containing hexitidine). Methods Antimicrobial susceptibility was checked by using the ditch method and Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) guidelines. Two different toothpastes with probiotic, toothpaste without probiotic and two different mouthrinses were tested against the following selected microorganisms: Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus salivarius and Staphylococcus aureus. Kruskal-Wallis test and MannWhitney U test were used for the statistical analysis (p≤ 0.05). Results Probiotic toothpastes had better inhibitory effect than toothpaste without probiotic in the case of Candida albicans (p=0.043) and Streptococcus salivarius (p=0.043). In all cases, toothpastes had stronger inhibition capacity than mouthrinses (p≤0.05). Conclusion Probiotic toothpastes, as a relatively new concept in the prevention of oral infectious diseases such as caries and periodontal disease, can contribute to the prevention of oral infectious diseases.

BACKGROUND It is important to understand how the psychological status of parents affects oral health in children. AIM This study aimed to assess the level of depression, anxiety, and stress of parents whose children have early-childhood caries. DESIGN The study included 235 children and their parents who visited the Dental clinic at the School of Medicine of the University of Split between October 2016 and July 2017. The dental status of each child was recorded, while parents filled out the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale questionnaire and the questionnaire related to the demographic characteristics, questions related to childs habits of the tooth brushing, eating sweets. RESULTS Multiple regression analysis showed that the incidence of active caries in the children was statistically significantly related not only to the level of parent depression (β = -0.289; P = 0.040) but also the level of anxiety (β = 0.186; P = 0.038) and stress (β = -0.120; P = 0.036). The dmft index in the examined children was negatively significant associated with the parental level of depression (β = -0.305; P = 0.032). CONCLUSION Considering the results of our research it is essential to emphasize the need for better health education of parents.

Abstract Objective: This study aimed to evaluate possible DNA damages to oral epithelial cells exposed to whitening kinds of toothpaste considering the effect of conventional non-whitening toothpaste. Materials and methods: Sixty volunteers were assigned into three experimental groups, each of them using a different regular toothpaste for the initial 2 months, followed by the use of whitening kind of toothpaste of the same brand for next 2 months. The oral epithelial cells were sampled prior and 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after the beginning of the use of tested kinds of toothpaste. Chromosomal damages were analyzed by micronucleus assay. Results: For just one kind of tested whitening toothpaste was observed the significant increase in the number of micronucleated cells after 60 days of use compared values obtained 60 days of usage of conventional non-whitening toothpaste (6.35 ± 3.67 and 2.8 ± 1.91; p < .05). There was no statistically significant difference in other micronucleus assay endpoints between tested types of toothpaste at either of the sampling times during the period of toothpaste application. Conclusions: Based on the results, it can be concluded that the use of certain whitening kinds of toothpaste may cause a limited biologically insignificant genotoxic effect on buccal epithelial cells.

The accomplishment of developing a truly adhesive bond between a restorative material and the natural tooth structures is the goal of adhesive dentistry. Dentine adhesive systems come into close contact with dental and oral tissue, especially the pulp and gingival cells. Due to this close and long-term contact, adhesives should exhibit a high degree of biocompatibility. Biocompatibility is one of the most important properties of dental materials, and adhesives are no exception. It has been long demonstrated that different components of adhesives can be released. Numerous in vitro investigations have shown that released monomers and other components can cause damage to cultured cells. In addition, many in vivo studies have shown that uncured components which reach the pulpal space cause inflammatory response and tissue disorganization. Only a combination of various in vitro and in vivo tests can provide an overview of the interaction of biomaterials with the host. Therefore, it is necessary on a regular basis to carry out and re-verify the biological compatibility of the increasing number of new dental materials. Adhesives should be biofunctional, protective, and preventive, with health-promoting effects that contribute to a better prognosis for restorative treatments and its biocompatibility.
