Lewis acidic ionic liquid choline chloride ·2ZnCl 2 is shown to be for the first time an excellent solvent and efficient catalyst for the synthesis of quinolines via Friedlander annulation under mild conditions.

A mild and efficient route for the synthesis of quinolines and polycyclic quinolines utilizing cerium (IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) as a novel catalyst via Friedlander annulation in ionic liquid 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [Bmim][PF 6 ] under mild conditions was described.

The reaction of N-benzenesulfonyl-β-phenethylamines with α-benzoyl sulfides using polymer-supported bis(trifluoroacetoxyiodo)benzene (PSBTI) gives moderate to good yields of the corresponding 1-benzoyltetrahydroisoquinoline derivatives.

Meldrums acids can be allylated by allylic alcohols using tetrakis[triphenylphosphine]palladium(0) [(PPh 3 ) 4 Pd] as a catalyst in benzene at 80°C without prior activation of allylic hydroxy group.

We have demonstrated the use of the room temperature ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumhexafluorophosphate ([bmim]PF 6 ), as an environmentally benign solvent for the preparation of 2-benzenesulfonyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-1-carboxylic acid ethyl ester derivatives through Pictet-Spengler reaction using phenyliodine(III) bis(trifluoroacetate) (PIFA) under mild conditions.
