Preparation of electromagnetic shielding wood-metal composite by electroless nickel plating

Wang Lijuan; Li Jian; Liu Yixing

Electrical and electromagnetic shielding wood-metal composite was prepared by using electroless nickel plating. The effects of solution amount, plating time and plating temperature on surface resistivity and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness were investigated. And P content, microstructure and surface feature of layers obtained at different temperatures were analyzed by energy dispersion spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that layers with higher electro-conductivity and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness were obtained under the optimum conditions that plating solution was 500 mL, plating time was 30 min and plating temperature was 62°C. The results showed by EDS analysis that P content increased gradually in a small extent with plating temperature increased. It was showed by XRD and SEM analysis that layers plated at different temperatures were all microcrystalline structure and uniform and successive, which had noticeable metal luster. Those indicated that plating temperature had little influence on microstructure and surface feature under pH value invariable.

Surface characteristics of electroless nickel plated electromagnetic shielding wood veneer

Wang Lijuan; Li Jian; Liu Yixing

Wood is a kind of porous natural material with very poor electro-conductivity, and it has almost no function of electromagnetic shielding. The method of electroless nickel plating was used to produce wooden material with electrical and effective electromagnetic shielding properties. Ni−P alloy layer was obtained on wood surface. The surface feature of plated wood veneer was observed by SEM and the surface composition and microstructure of the layer under different conditions were investigated by EDS and XRD respectively. Mean-while, the relevant surface resistivity and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness were measured. Correlations of the phosphorous content in the layer to the structure of Ni−P alloy, electro-conductivity and electromagnetic shielding of plated veneers were discussed. SEM photos showed that the surface of electroless nickel plated veneers were covered with Ni−P alloy layer entirely, which made wood veneers more like metal. At the same time, the results showed that with the decreasing of the phosphorous content in the layer, the microstructure of Ni−P alloy layer transformed to be microcrystalline and electro-conductivity and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness were imrpoved. When the phosphorous content was less than 2.37wt pct in the layer, the microstructure of Ni−P alloy layer was microcrystalline structure and its surface resistivity and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness were nearly 0.5 Ω/⊥ and 55–60dB respectively.

Auto detection of wood texture orientation by Radon transform

Yu Haipeng; Liu Yixing; Liu Zhenbo

A novel and efficient approach for detecting wood texture orientation by computer was presented. Four Matlab functions were tried to describe the relative position and orientation of wood texture pixels, to detect texture shape and to create skeletal lines image of wood texture, and BWMORPH function was found the best one. Then by Radon transform, it generated a signature composed of 180 values, each value summing up the size of texture lines that are shaped along that angle, and a two dimensional curve plot was drawn to represent the texture orientation of wood. Furthermore, it analyzed texture orientations of forty species as well as their general statistic laws, classified by softwood, hardwood, radial section and tangential section, and the results showed that texture orientation laws described by Radon transform plot and their extracting datum were in accord with the impression of wood texture that people possessed in daily life, which confirmed the validity of this new approach and their appealing utilization potentials.

The effect of heat treatment on different species wood colour

Liu Yixing; Li Jian; Wang Jinman; Yan Jinsong; Ma Yanhua

In this paper, the heat tratment of wood samples of 8 tree species with different colour were made at different temperature and time. Using SC-1 Model colorimeter, the colorimetric parameter was measured at quantitative measuring for treatment fore-and-after wood samples color. The effect of heat treatment conditions on wood color was analyzed. The results indicated: the temperature and time of heat treatment affected on big extent for wood samples color, in which the heat temperature was more evident than others. The luminance index of wood color parameter was more sensitive to treatment condition, which it reduced with temperature and time increasing, this kind of variation tendency was the same as all wood samples, but the variations extent was more different among the different wood species. After heat treatment the wood color hue and saturation variation direction were different for different wood species. This phenomenon had the relation to the migration and volatilization of color extract in heating process, or the rapid oxidation of Iignin and some chemical element in high temperature.

Measurement of the dynamic modulus of elasticity of wood panels

Liu Zhenbo; Liu Yixing; Yu Haipeng; Yuan Junqi

This study investigated the dynamic modulus of elasticity (DMOE) of wood panels of Fraxinus mandshurica, Pinus koraiensis, and Juglans mandshurica using the natural frequency measurement system of fast Fourier transform (FFT). The results were compared with the static modulus of elasticity (ES) tested by a mechanical test machine. The results show a significant correlation between ES, transverse vibration DMOE (EF), and longitudinal vibration DMOE (EL). For all of these species, the correlation between ES, EF and EL is more significant than the individual species, which indicated that the FFT method is universal. The correlations between ES and sample’s density (ρ) are significant, but the correlation coefficient of ES and ρ is lower than those between EF, EL and ES. The ES of wood is more accurately tested by the analysis based on FFT measurement than by the estimation based on density.

Study on plant fiber/plastic composites as the substrate of floorboard

Yang Wenbin; Li Jian; Liu Yixing

Three kinds of composites (fiber/Polypropylene, fiber/Polyethelene, and fiber/Polystyrene) were made by using hot pressing process for substrate of floorboard and the properties of each kind of composites were tested. MORs of PP/wood fiber, PS/fiber, and PE/fiber composites with coupling agent added were raised by 18.4%, 37.1%, and 42%, respectively, compared to those without coupling agent. Among the three kinds of fiber/plastic composites, fiber/PP composite has best mechanical properties, and it can meet quality standard of eligible grade product and come up to the excellent grade products of China when the coupling agent is added. The performance of composite made of PE/fiber or PS/fiber can exceed qualified product grade only with coupling agent added.

Preliminary study on the characteristics of tactility of wood by physiological index HRV

Yu Haipeng; Liu Yixing; Xiao Xiang-hong

We used heart rate variability (HRV), an electrophysiological index, to investigate the changes of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems of people when they were in contact with wood and other materials, in a time-domain, a frequency-domain, and by means of nonlinear dynamics. Our aim was to discover the relations among thermal parameters of different kinds of material, human physiological feedbacks, and psychological perceptions. It shows that the activity of the sympathetic nervous system when in contact with wood increased no more than when in contact with metal and ceramic materials, while the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system weakened less than when in contact with these materials. The time taken by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems to revert to their normal state after contact with cloth and wood was shorter than that after contact with metal and ceramic. A subjective survey, by SD method, showed that the tactility of wood was favorable and people preferred wood to other kinds of material. Correlation analysis’ results showed that there was a close correlation among the HRV indices, human psychological emotion ratings, and thermal parameters of the different kinds of materials. The experiment proves that the effect of wood on our autonomous nervous system is slightly better than that of other materials except for cloth. Wood does not damage people’s health.

Li Jian; Liu Yixing; Cui Yongzhi; Xu Zicai

According to the data of trashed length, micro fiber angle, air density, ring width and late wood percentage, with the analysis of optimum method of classification, the boundary line of juvenile wood and mature wood of planted Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) was determined as the 14th year. Based on the variation pattern of these parameters, the prediction equations were established. Wood quality prediction can be realized by these equations. By error analysis between the values of measured data and the values of prediction data, it is found that the results of wood prediction of planted Chinese fire are satisfactory.
