Summary The dimensionality of attitudes toward environmental quality was investigated in three separate studies of 660 undergraduates and adult citizens, 207 middle-class housewives, and 51 members of environmental groups. A three-dimensional scale was developed, representing concerns for environmental degradation, environmental action, and overpopulation. Members of environmental action organizations were found to have significantly higher scores for each of the three dimensions than middle-class citizens. Global attitudinal concern for environmental degradation and for environmental action were typically found to be better predictors of general levels of behavioral involvement in action than of single activities.

The classical, human relations and contingency types of organization are outlined by the authors. They contend that CMHCs with a classical organizational structure are not likely to function effectively. The contingency type of organization is suggested as the model CMHCs should adopt.

The problem of interorganizational interaction was reviewed in terms of organizational structure and process, organizational size, and domain consensus between organizations. In order to determine the relationship between these factors and interorganizational interaction, interview data were gathered from personnel in a sample of 27 social service agencies. Cluster analysis results indicated a strong relationship between relationships of goal/task similarity and the degrees of interorganizational interaction reported by staff of these service agencies. There were negligible relationships between interorganizational relations, organization size, and internal organizational structures and processes, respectively. Conceptual and practical implications were discussed.
