The adsorption processes of methylene blue from aqueous solution on Fe3O4/HKUST-1 and Fe3O4/HKUST-1/GO composites were compared. The addition of GO has greatly decreased the surface area and pore volume, led to smaller pore size, and enhanced the adsorption capacity of Fe3O4/HKUST-1/GO. The different interesting phenomena and the effect of GO were analyzed. The high adsorption capacity, excellent reusability and stability make Fe3O4/HKUST-1/GO attractive for the removal of MB from aqueous solution.

AbstractThe adsorptions of methylene blue (MB) and methyl violet (MV) from an aqueous solution of Fe3O4/metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) composite were studied in view of the adsorption isotherm, kinetics and regenerate of the sorbent. The adsorption isotherms of MB and MV on Fe3O4/MOFs composite both followed the Langmuir isotherm. Adsorption kinetics were determined from the experimental data. The used Fe3O4/MOFs could be regenerated by acetonitrile, so it can be recycled for use. The excellent adsorption effect and reusability make Fe3O4/MOFs attractive for the removal of MB and MV from aqueous solution. The feasibility of Fe3O4/MOFs for application in magnetic solid-phase extraction was examined.

The adsorption of malachite green from an aqueous solution of magnetic Fe3O4 was studied in view of the adsorption isotherm, kinetics and regeneration of the sorbent. The adsorption isotherm of MG on nano-Fe3O4 composite followed the Langmuir isotherm. Adsorption kinetics was determined from the experimental data. The nano-Fe3O4 can be recycled for reuse after regeneration through acetonitrile. The high adsorption capacity and excellent reusability made Fe3O4 attractive for the removal of MG from aqueous solution.

A composite of chromium (III) terephthalate metal-organic framework and graphene oxide (MIL-101/GO) coated stir bar was prepared by sol–gel technique for the first time and was employed for stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) of trace azo dyes amaranth, sunset yellow and carmine from water samples followed by UV–Vis spectrophotometric detection. A MIL-101/GO coating was first created on the glass bar surface. MIL-101/GO and MIL-101/GO coated stir bars were characterized. The enrichment factors of azo dyes by SBSE have been investigated in detail, and the optimized experimental parameters were obtained. Under the optimal conditions, a method for determination of trace amount of azo dyes was setup, and the detection limits of amaranth, sunset yellow and carmine were 2.3 ng/mL, 1.7 ng/mL and 1.6 ng/mL. The proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of the three azo dyes in water samples.

Fe3O4/MOF (metal organic framework)/L-cysteine was synthesized and applied for the removal of Cd(II) from wastewater. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were investigated, and the results indicated that the adsorption obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity was calculated to be 248.24 mg g−1. Fe3O4/MOF/L-cysteine was further applied to determine trace amounts of Cd(II) in real water samples using ICP-AES (inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy) based on magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The determination limit was 10.6 ng mL−1. Additionally, Fe3O4/MOF/L-cysteine can also be used as a fluorescent sensor for “turn-off” detection of Cd(II), and the detection limit was 0.94 ng mL−1.

The adsorption of three kinds of azo dyes from aqueous solution on HKUST-1/graphene oxide (GO) composite was studied in view of the removal efficiency, adsorption isotherm, and regenerate of the sorbent. HKUST-1/GO was found to be with higher dyes removal efficiency than HKUST-1. All the adsorption isotherms of azo dyes on HKUST-1/GO composite followed Freundlich isotherm. The adsorbed azo dyes on HKUST-1/GO could be eluted by acetone, so HKUST-1/GO can also be used for enrichment of azo dyes as adsorbent.
