Geospatial metadata are largely denormalized inasmuch as resource descriptions typically accommodate property values as plain text. Hence, it is not possible to bring multiple references to the same entity (say, a keyword from a controlled vocabulary) under the same umbrella. This practice is ultimately the main source for the heterogeneities in metadata descriptions by which geospatial discovery is hampered. In this paper, we elaborate on ex-post semantic augmentation of metadata, a technique generally referred to as semantic lift, which complements our previous research on semantic characterization of metadata via transparent association of uniform resource identifiers with metadata items at editing time. The latter is accomplished by means of a template-based metadata editor that can be tailored to any XML-based metadata schema. By repurposing the template language previously defined for metadata editing, we broaden the expressiveness of the former and integrate heterogeneous, XML-based resource descriptions in our semantics-aware metadata management workflow. URI-based indirection in metadata provision not only entails normalization of individual information items and allows one to overcome the aforementioned heterogeneities, but also elicits decentralized, multi-tenanted management of metadata.

Nowadays a great deal of attention is devoted to the issue of supporting big data analytics over big mobile social data. These data are generated by modern emerging social systems like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and so forth. Mining big mobile social data has been of great interest, as analyzing such data is critical for a wide spectrum of big data applications (e.g., smart cities). Among several proposals, clustering is a well-known solution for extracting interesting and actionable knowledge from massive amounts of big mobile (geo-located) social data. Inspired by this main thesis, this paper proposes an effective and efficient similarity-matrix-based algorithm for clustering big mobile social data, called TourMiner, which is specifically targeted to clustering trips extracted from tweets, in order to mine most popular tours. The main characteristic of TourMiner consists in applying clustering over a well-suited similarity matrix computed on top of trips. A comprehensive experimental assessment and analysis over Twitter data finally comfirms the benefits coming from our proposal.

Nowadays Spatial Data Infrastructures are the best practice to publish huge amount of spatial data on the Web in an interoperable and distributed way. Nevertheless, this operation requires a significant effort, expertise and motivation to data providers. In this paper, we propose an original approach to support geo-data providers by automating the workflows for publishing geo-data and relative web services for a given application. The prototypal solution has been tested on a real case study to support the regional or national agricultural sector in Italy.
