Information and communication technology has been developing very rapidly in the last decade, especially in the video and audio field, which leads to the use of multimedia conference as a beneficial way to communicate. From that concept comes Virtual ClassBox (VCB), by enhancing educational process and helping educators in providing lectures over distance. VCB is a low-cost and easy-to-operate device consists of a single embedded board, combined with video camera and microphone, integrated with UNIX operating system made to send and receive multicast video stream over networks. In this paper, it will be covered mainly about specification and implementation of VCB. For the time, development of this product is still to operate in a local network.

In Indonesia, the condition of education still tends to be unbalanced. The quality of education in urban areas is generally far better than the quality of education in rural areas. Education processes in rural areas face some problems like limited teaching resources, slight teaching tools, and monotonous teaching method. Therefore, an idea is emerged, a thinking to create a system in order to improve the quality of education in rural areas. Virtual Classbox 4.1 is a distance learning system developed to improve the quality of education in rural areas with video conferencing technology. Virtual Classbox 4.1 is designed based on Design Science in Information System Research. In order to produce a great system, a scientific guidance must be used. Remarkable system need astounding design, like a good house needs a strong foundation. Because of that, Design Science in Information System Research, which is very well known in information system design research world, is used.

Design and implementation of digital signage system based on Raspberry Pi 2 for e-tourism in Indonesia

Yoanes Bandung; Yonathan F. Hendra; Luki Bangun Subekti

Tourism is a potential sector for national income. But in Indonesia, people still have less concern about the importance of tourism. This situation may be caused by the static and uninteresting method to promote Indonesian tourism. A suitable solution is implementing digital signage for e-tourism to increase people attraction to Indonesian tourism. Earlier research has been done to implement digital signage system using Xibo for Digital Signage with client-server system and board Raspberry Pi 1 Model B as the client terminal. But, the implementation is still lack of performance and needs further development. In this research, we designed a digital signage system particularly for supporting e-tourism in Indonesia and implemented its client terminal on Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. Moreover, we integrated the digital signage system with SMS feature to provide reliable real-time delivery of information. The result shows that the digital signage system for supporting e-tourism has been successfully designed and implemented. The result also shows the quality improvement of digital signage system compared to the previous system.

The concept of distance learning system refers to the way of learning which is not in regular face-to-face method, but through any means of long distance communication. Realization of distance learning system in Indonesia is usually in one-way communication manner, that is, students can not directly interact with teachers. This paper describes the design and implementation of a web-based application which is named Cakra Wahana Paksa: Collaborative Whiteboard. This application enables two-way communication between teachers and students in form of virtual whiteboard session using WebSocket technology and server-sent event feature of HTML5. The result of WebSocket technology and server-sent event implementation in Cakra Wahana Paksa shows that the quality of communication in each of virtual whiteboard session is near real-time. The evaluation showed that the average broadcast time of a message in the session with three clients is 2.86 milliseconds, and the one with five clients is 3.25 milliseconds. This application separates each virtual whiteboard session into any available ports on computer server so each of them does not hinder one another.

Educational resources and transportation infrastructure scarcity has become the major obstructions for Indonesian education development. To solve these problems, Virtual Class Box (VCB) 5.0 device is designed as an effort to support digital distance learning. It provides videoconference to connect teachers and students from different school. This paper explains the design and implementation of a videoconference system, along with its supporting operating system, applications and hardware. The hardware includes CPU, filter, converter and peripheral user interface modules while the software is built based on Linux Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS operating system, Linphone Voice-over-IP application, and other open-source packages. This videoconference system facilitates learning-multimedia-sharing with a simple user interface and can operate in internet bandwidth of under 2Mbps while generates delay propagation time less than 100ms. VCB 5.0 operating system provides a software that can automatically configure the designed application, as well as easing the usage of the application. The operating system also consumes minimum resource and can be recreated for mass production purpose easily. VCB 5.0 hardware made the whole system portable and compatible with various types of supporting hardware. VCB 5.0 device is also accompanied with manual book and usage video so it can be introduced widely to consumers.

Development of multimedia streaming technology over bandwidth-limited network and its implementation in rural area

Yoanes Bandung; Harry Chandra Tanuwidjaja; Luki Bangun Subekti

There is a big difference between the development of rural area and city area in Indonesia. Education level in the countryside is far less superior to town life. In order to address that problem, information and communication technology (ICT) will be used. Multimedia streaming technology is a solution to enhance the quality of life in rural area. However, the development of Internet network infrastructure in countryside is still not as good as in big cities. As a result, the people in countryside faced instability network problem. This situation is called bandwidth limited network, a condition which is caused by the up and down of Internet speed. Because of that, a multimedia streaming technology which can be operated over bandwidth-limited network is developed. In this paper, we present the development of multimedia streaming technology and its application in rural area of Indonesia. Specifically, we investigated about the performance of the multimedia streaming technology using eighteen parameters, focusing in audio-video delay, jitter, and jitter buffer. The result showed that the average video delay when there was no Internet problem was under 1 second, captured jitter average was at 3 ms, jitter buffer was under 1 second, and total bandwidth was far under 3.9 Mbps. As a result, the multimedia streaming technology is very suitable to be implemented in bandwidth limited network to enhance the quality of education in rural area of Indonesia.
