Gamification framework model, based on social engagement in e-learning 2.0

Oscar Wongso; Yusep Rosmansyah; Yoanes Bandung

E-learning has been used to help students in learning. But nowadays the problem in e-learning is the students motivation and engagement. A study about engagement in e-learning said, students who rarely use e-learning get worse score than their friends who often use e-learning. A lot of methods have been used to motivate and improve students engagement in using e-learning. One of the methods is by using social engagement in Web 2.0 technology, where students can be interactive with each other and participate in making lecture material. This function implemented in e-learning is called e-learning 2.0. The other method is by implementing game mechanism and elements in non-game applications like e-learning, called gamification. This paper explores related works on e-learning 2.0, gamification model, and then making a conceptual framework design, based on social engagement in Web 2.0 technology and gamification using Design Science Research Model as methodology. Using this framework design can be a guideline to people who want to implement gamification and Web 2.0 technology in e-learning system.

In education, application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) brings out the term of digital learning which can be used to support conventional learning process. Digital learning is one of alternative solutions to problems concerning good quality education disparities in rural areas, which is caused by the lacking of teacher resources. Case study in Cianjur is an action in applying ICT with multimedia system into learning activities as an alternative solution. In terms of needs, alternative method of learning activity is required by the students because they have lagged in education behind students in urban areas. There are many challenges that have to be solved in implementing multimedia-based learning services, especially in rural areas. The challenges include electrical resources, networking, application software systems, human resources, hardware system, and risk management. All of these challenges have to be overcome so that multimedia-based learning service can be conducted properly.

Yoanes Bandung; Carmadi Machbub; Armein Z. R. Langi; Suhono Harso Supangkat

In this paper, we optimize low speed networks access for designing an efficient Voice over Internet Protocol network, especially in 64 kbps, 128 kbps, and 256 kbps bandwidth capacities. We draw some analytical approach based on Extended E-model to quantify some levels of quality of service. Using the model, those levels are determined by network parameters such as delay, jitter, packet loss level, network utilization, and bandwidth capacity and by implementation configuration such as voice coder, packetization scheme, and size of jitter buffer. Our objective is to find maximum number of calls in some given bandwidth capacities while maintaining a certain level of the quality of service. Using numeric estimation, we found that the optimum solution for some given bandwidth capacities can be achieved by applying G.723.1 5.3 kbps voice coder, packet loss level less than 1%, jitter less than 80 ms, and network utilization less than 80%.

In Indonesia, the condition of education still tends to be unbalanced. The quality of education in urban areas is generally far better than the quality of education in rural areas. Education processes in rural areas face some problems like limited teaching resources, slight teaching tools, and monotonous teaching method. Therefore, an idea is emerged, a thinking to create a system in order to improve the quality of education in rural areas. Virtual Classbox 4.1 is a distance learning system developed to improve the quality of education in rural areas with video conferencing technology. Virtual Classbox 4.1 is designed based on Design Science in Information System Research. In order to produce a great system, a scientific guidance must be used. Remarkable system need astounding design, like a good house needs a strong foundation. Because of that, Design Science in Information System Research, which is very well known in information system design research world, is used.

Performance analysis of supporting QoS for multimedia in IEEE 802.11e

Agga Kamadyta; Yoanes Bandung; Armein Z. R. Langi

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) based on IEEE 802.11e provides Quality of Service (QoS) support at the Medium Access Control (MAC) sublayer. IEEE 802.11e MAC sublayer uses a function called Hybrid Coordination Function (HCF) with Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA). EDCA is a QoS mechanism that provides a priority scheme by differentiating interframe space and contention window size, it also uses Contention Free Bursting (CFB) scheme that can improve the efficiency of the system. In this study we analyzed performance of wireless network based on IEEE 802.11e in supporting QoS for multimedia transmission. We use three different types of traffic, those are voice, video, and data to analyze the performance of the network in supporting multimedia transmission.

The impact of background traffic towards multimedia content delivery Quality on limited capacity network

Jay Idoan Sihotang; Yoanes Bandung

This paper will discuss about transmission of multimedia content in limited capacity network (up to 5 Mbps), especially to study about the impact of background traffic towards multimedia content delivery quality in a limited capacity network. Observation methods proposed in the study include measurement of limited capacity network, background traffic modeling, and simulating the network to observe the impact of background traffic on multimedia content delivery Quality of Service (QoS). Constructed model of background traffic was developed based on testbed network rates of traffic measurement and were separated based on traffic types and interval of delivery. Simulation was done by using some scenarios in simulated network with different background traffic rates from the background traffic modeling. In our research, multimedia content is transmitted using H264 720p configuration. Result of simulation shows the impact of background traffic towards multimedia content delivery QoS. With the increasing rate of generated background traffic (0%, 30%, and 50%), the end-to-end delay and packet loss were also increased. On average, the QoS of multimedia content delivery were acceptable with enough quality. But when the generated background traffic was rated at 50%, the end-to-end delay of multimedia content delivery scored enough and still acceptable, while the packet loss rate of multimedia content delivery scored bad and not acceptable according to ITU-T G.114.

Bandwidth allocation-aware scheduling algorithm for video-on-demand application over digital learning network

Eni Triningsih; Yoanes Bandung

Digital learning in Indonesian rural area faces some problems in delivering Video-on-Demand (VoD) as learning materials because of heterogeneous and limited network. Recently, data-driven overlay network (DONet) approaches have attracted a lot of attention to solve VoD delivery problems in peer-to-peer based network. This paper presents an enhanced algorithm in overlay-network based digital learning built upon on previous research called CoolStreaming. The new algorithm takes into account bandwidth allocation of each node in scheduling content delivery process. The modified algorithm is then validated by comparing it with the previous algorithm. Validation of the proposed algorithm was based on simulation using OverSim and OMNET++ network simulator. We conducted three different scenarios to compare the proposed algorithm with the previous algorithm. The results show that the proposed algorithm has given better Quality of Service (QoS) performance than previous algorithm in all scenarios. The enhanced algorithm has indicated good quality in the investigated QoS parameters, namely delay and throughput.
