Robots for Real: Developing a Participatory Design Framework for Implementing Educational Robots in Real-world Learning Environments

Lykke Brogaard Bertel; Dorte Malig Rasmussen; Ellen Tove Christiansen

As educational service robots become increasingly accessible, the demand for methodologies that generate knowledge on r-learning applicable to real world learning environments equally increases. This paper proposes a participatory design framework for involving users in the development of robot-supported didactic designs and discusses its applicability to existing educational contexts on the basis of a case study on the implementation and use of the therapeutic robot seal Paro at a school for children with an autism diagnosis.

On Being a Peer: What Persuasive Technology for Teaching Can Gain from Social Robotics in Education

Lykke Brogaard Bertel; Dorte Malig Rasmussen

This paper investigates and discusses the persuasive principles of social actors in relation to other theories of technologies as social agents, particularly within the field of Social Robotics and Persuasive Educational and Entertainment Robotics PEERs. Based on related research and results from a case study on social robots as persuasive social actors in education an extension of the persuasive principles is proposed and related design guidelines for Persuasive Technology as social actors in teaching are presented.

Initial phases of design-based research into the educational potentials of NAO-robots

Gunver Majgaard; Lykke Brogaard Bertel

In this paper, we describe our initial research, using the humanoid robot NAO in primary and secondary schools. How does a programmable humanoid enrich teaching and how do we prepare the teachers? Ten school classes are using the robot for creative programming. So far we have experienced that the robot enriches the learning processes by combining the auditory, visual and kinaesthetic modalities.
