Influence of cutting parameters on the chip-tool interface temperature during the turning of Waspaloy

Yahya Isik; Abdil Kus; M. Cemal Cakir

Abstract Waspaloy, as a nickel superalloy, is a difficult-to-machine material used for gas turbine engine components that require considerable strength and corrosion resistance at high operating temperatures. The machining of nickel-based alloys generates high temperatures at the cutting tool edge. This research investigated the relationship between cutting parameters and cutting temperature, using a remote temperature measurement method employing an infrared thermometer. In addition, the effects of cutting parameters on surface roughness were examined. Experiments were conducted on Waspaloy AMS5708 superalloy samples and a PVD TiAlN-TiN-coated WNVG 080404-IC907 carbide insert was used during the turning process. It was observed that the highest cutting speed and highest feed rate generated higher temperatures and higher surface roughness. Better surface roughness was obtained with the lowest feed rate, the highest cutting speed and the higher cutting depth. No cutting fluid was used in the experiments.

A 3-D Model Based Matching Technique for the Automatic Inspection of Machined Parts

M. Cemal Cakir

Abstract Industry requires that all or a sample of the products manufactured are inspected in order that some measure of quality and reliability is attained. For a complex manufactured object the inspection process will have many stages - from testing the compatibility of each component to testing the performance and acceptance of the finished product. The inspection task that the proposed system is intended to perform is the geometric tolerances, that is to say checking the position of gross features of objects to standard tolerances. In order to do this, the system checks the nlachined parts against the original design of the components by matching the surface description of machined parts to the surface description of their solid model under translation and rotation, computes the difference between the two and reports any out-of-tolerance differences deduced from them. In order to do the matching Procrustean analysis [Sibson (1978)] is applied.

An Expert System for Diagnosing Faults on CNC Machine Tool Breakdowns

M. Cemal Cakir; Erdal Emel

Abstract In this study, an expert system (ES) has been developed for diagnosing faults causing breakdowns in computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine tools. The knowledge-base (KB) for ES has been established using structural, conceptual and heuristic knowledge. Generic design information for mechanical, electrical and hydraulic structural elements of CNC machine tools, together with expert maintenance personnels knowledge constitutes the knowledge-base. The expert system is implemented in Prolog with an interactive menu driven user interface.
