Abstract The performances of the H1 liquid argon calorimeter modules for the energy measurements and identification of electrons are studied with test data taken at CERN in the energy range 5 to 166 GeV. Various electron identification estimators exploiting global or detailed shower characteristics are studied and compared. The usage of impact position measurements is also discussed. A best combination of robust shower estimators leads typically to π-misidentification probabilities in the range 1.5 to 5.0 × 10−3 at 30 GeV for 95% electron detection efficiency. This further reduces to ∼ 10−4 for these pions to be misidentified as electrons below 25 GeV.

The performance of lead tungstate crystals using photomultipliers and Si avalanche photodiodes to detect the scintillation light has been studied using high energy electron, pion and muon beams at CERN. Results from tests carried out in 1993 and 1994 are presented. Good energy resolution has been obtained using photomultipliers. Some further development is required of crystals and avalanche photodiodes in order to achieve a performance, with avalanche photodiode readout, similar to that obtained using photomultipliers.

Abstract Tests of a prototype for the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) of the compact muon solenoid experiment (CMS) at the large hadron collider are described. The basic unit for the endcap ECAL in CMS is a “supercrystal” of 25 lead tungstate crystals. Results are presented from tests of the first full-sized supercrystal in electron beams and in a 3xa0T magnetic field. The supercrystal was exposed to electron beams with energies from 25 to 180xa0GeV. An energy resolution (σE/E) of (0.48±0.01)% was measured at 180xa0GeV.
