The genus Uroleucon (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Macrosiphini) in Argentina, with descriptions of five new species

M. Pilar Mier Durante; Jaime Ortego; M. Victoria Seco Fernández

Uroleucon is one of the largest genera of Macrosiphini, with 216 known species; it is one of the few genera of Aphidinae to have a diversification in South America, with 15 native species and 1 subspecies. Moreover, 7 introduced species have been recorded in South America. Five new species from Argentina are described herein: Uroleucon malarguense Ortego and Nieto Nafría, sp. nov., U. mendocinum Mier Durante and Ortego, sp. nov., U. patagonicum Nieto Nafría and Seco Fernández, sp. nov., U. payuniense Ortego and Nieto Nafría, sp. nov., and U. riojanum Nieto Nafría and Mier Durante, sp. nov. One Palearctic species, U. jaceae (Linnaeus), has been recorded for the first time in South America, and thus 28 species and 1 subspecies are now known from South America. Uroleucon essigi Carvalho and U. chilense (Essig) are recorded for the first time from Argentina, and 20 of these 29 taxa are known for this country. New morphological and bionomic data from some previously known species are given. Alate viviparous females of U. gochnatiae Delfino and oviparae and males of U. bereticum (Blanchard) and U. macolai (Blanchard) are described. A taxonomic discussion about native South American species of Uroleucon is given, and we include them at present in the subgenus Lambersius. A key is provided for the identification of apterous and alate viviparous females.

Six alien aphid species (Hemiptera: Aphididae) recorded for the first time from South America

M. Pilar Mier Durante; Jaime Ortego; Nicolás Pérez Hidalgo

Abstract Six aphid species: Saltusaphis scirpus Theobald, Myzocallis boerneri Stroyan, Macrosiphoniella absinthii (Linnaeus), Macrocrosiphoniella abrotani (Walker), Macrosiphoniella pseudoartemisiae Shinji and Macrosiphoniella tapuskae (Hottes & Frison) are recorded for the first time in South America. They were all collected in Argentina. Comments for each species and identification keys for Myzocallidina and Macrosiphoniella known in South America are given.

Three new South American species of genus Aphis (Hemiptera: Aphididae) living on species of Euphorbia (Euphorbiaceae).

Sara I. López Ciruelos; M. Pilar Mier Durante; Jaime Ortego; Sergio García-Tejero

Three species of Aphis living on species of Euphorbia in Argentina and Chile are described: Aphis tehuelchis Nieto Nafría & López Ciruelos, sp. n., from viviparous females collected in the Argentinean provinces of Santa Cruz and Neuquén, Aphis maulensis Mier Durante & García-Tejero, sp. n., from viviparous females collected in the Chilean Region VII, and Aphis eucollinae López Ciruelos & Ortego, sp. n., from viviparous females, oviparous females and males collected in the Argentinean province of Mendoza. These new species may be distinguished from each other, besides other features, by the abdominal marginal tubercles: in A. tehuelchis these are present on segments 1 and 7 and on several of segments 2 to 6, in A. maulensis they are on segment 1 and on several segments 2 to 6, but lacking on segment 7, and in A. eucollinae they are only on segments 1 and 7. Differences between the new species and those currently known living on Euphorbia around the world are presented.

First American Records of Aphis intybi (Hemiptera: Aphididae) with Notes on Two Other Related Adventive Species in Argentina

M. Pilar Mier Durante; Robert G. Foottit; Carol D. von Dohlen; Jaime Ortego

ABSTRACT Aphis intybi Koch is recorded for the first time in North and South America. Measurements for the identification of this species in comparison with Aphis craccivora Koch are given. Aphis cytisorum Hartig is recorded for the third time in Argentina. Data on morphological variation, geographical distribution, and host plants of these species in Argentina are provided. Their morphological identification is supported by comparison of DNA sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (DNA barcode) and subunit 2.

A New Species of Uroleucon (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Living on Adesmia (Fabaceae)

M. Pilar Mier Durante; Jaime Ortego

Abstract We describe the apterous and alate viviparous females of a new species of the subgenus Lambersius of the genus Uroleucon (Hemiptera Aphididae) from Argentina living on Adesmia (Fabaceae). Uroleucon adesmiae sp. n. is the first South American species of this genus exclusively living on a species of Fabaceae. A previous key for the apterous viviparous females of the Uroleucon species recorded in South America is modified to include the new species.

Two South American New Species of Neophyllaphis Subgenus Chileaphis (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

M. Pilar Mier Durante; Miguel-Ángel Delfino; Jaime Ortego; F. Wolfgang Quednau

Abstract Two South American new species of Neophyllaphis Takahashi (Aphididae Neuquenaphidinae) are described, Neophyllaphis cuschensis Nieto Nafría & Delfino sp. nov. collected on Podocarpus glomeratus D. Don in Cusco (Peru) and Neophyllaphis iuiuyensis Mier Durante & Ortego sp. nov. collected on Podocarpus parlatorei Pilg. in San Salvador de Jujuy (Argentina). The apterous and alate viviparous females of N. cuschensis and the apterous and alate viviparous females, as well as the oviparous females and males of N. iuiuyensis are described. The differences between the nominotypical subgenus and Chileaphis and also the differences among the 4 species of subgenus Chileaphis, viz. the 2 new species and those already known and found in Chile, N. michelbacheri Essig and N. podocarpini Carrillo are outlined.

Delfinoia, a new South American aphid genus (Hemiptera, Aphididae, Macrosiphini) on Cayaponia (Cucurbitaceae)

M. Pilar Mier Durante; Sara I. López Ciruelos

Abstract The genus Delfinoia Nieto Nafría & Mier Durante gen. n. is established, and Utamphorophora peruviana (Essig), originally Amphorophora peruviana and currently Delfinoia peruviana comb. n., is designated species type of the genus. The synonymy between this species and Wahlgreniella australis Delfino syn. n. is established. Apterous and alate viviparous females of D. peruviana are redescribed; the male is also described. The species is currently known from Peru and Argentina; a plant of the genus Cayaponia (Cucurbitaceae) is the only identified host.

A new aphid genus and species (Hemiptera: Aphididae) from Argentina on Mulinum (Apiales: Apiaceae)

M. Pilar Mier Durante; Jaime Ortego

Abstract Capraphis n. g. is described and placed in the tribe Macrosiphini Wilson 1910(1887) (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Aphidinae), and its taxonomic position and differences with other American related genera discussed. The apterous and alate viviparous females and the apterous oviparous females and males of its type-species, Capraphis blackmani n. sp., are described and illustrated from aphids collected on Mulinum spinosum (Cav.) Pers. in Mendoza province, Argentina.
