Guided Wave Tomography Based on Full Waveform Inversion

Jing Rao; Madis Ratassepp; Zheng Fan

In this paper, a guided wave tomography method based on full waveform inversion (FWI) is developed for accurate and high-resolution reconstruction of the remaining wall thickness in isotropic plates. The forward model is computed in the frequency domain by solving a full-wave equation in a two-dimensional (2-D) acoustic model, accounting for higher order effects such as diffractions and multiple scattering. Both numerical simulations and experiments were carried out to obtain the signals of a dispersive guided mode propagating through defects. The inversion was based on local optimization of a waveform misfit function between modeled and measured data, and was applied iteratively to discrete frequency components from low to high frequencies. The resulting wave velocity maps were then converted to thickness maps by the dispersion characteristics of selected guided modes. The results suggest that the FWI method is capable to reconstruct the thickness map of a irregularly shaped defect accurately on a 10-mm-thick plate with the thickness error within 0.5 mm.

Anisotropic effects on ultrasonic guided waves propagation in composite bends.

Xudong Yu; Madis Ratassepp; Prabhu Rajagopal; Zheng Fan

Ultrasonic guided waves have proven to be attractive to the long-range testing of composite laminates. As complex-shaped composite components are increasingly incorporated in high-performance structures, understanding of both anisotropic and geometric effects on guided waves propagation is needed to evaluate their suitability for the non-destructive testing (NDT) of such complex structures. This paper reports the Semi-Analytical Finite Element (SAFE) simulations revealing the capability of energy confinement carried by two types of guided modes in 90° carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) bends. Existence of the phenomenon is cross-validated by both 3D Finite Element (FE) modeling and experimental measurements. The physics of such energy trapping effect is explained in view of geometric variation and anisotropic properties, and the frequency effect on the extent of energy concentration is discussed. Finally, the feasibility of using such confined guided waves for rapid inspection of bent composite plate structures is also discussed.

Limited-view ultrasonic guided wave tomography using an adaptive regularization method

Jing Rao; Madis Ratassepp; Zheng Fan

Ultrasonic guided waves are useful to assess the integrity of a structure from a remote location. Recently, tomography techniques have been developed to quantitatively estimate the thickness map of plate-like structures based on the dispersion characteristics of guided waves. In many applications only limited locations are available to place transducers. The missing viewing angles lead to artifacts which can degrade the image quality. To address this problem, this paper applies the regularization method to synthesize the missing components. The regularization technique is performed by an adaptive threshold approach to the limited view reconstruction. The effectiveness of this method combined with the full waveform inversion method is demonstrated by using numerical simulations as well as experiments on an irregularly shaped defect and two flat-bottom defects. The results indicate that the additional components obtained from the regularization method can significantly reduce the artifacts, leading to bette...

Wave mode extraction from multimodal wave signals in an orthotropic composite plate.

Madis Ratassepp; Zheng Fan; Kaspar Lasn

In this paper the post-processing procedure based on the mode orthogonality is applied to extract individual waveforms at a composite plate edge from multimodal signals. To obtain the amplitudes of individual modes, numerically predicted modal through-thickness stress and displacement field values are used in the orthogonality relation. The performance of the mode extraction technique is evaluated by processing signals obtained from Finite Element (FE) modeling and experimental measurements. The propagation of the overlapping wave packets of Lamb modes S0 and A0 is considered along the fiber direction and perpendicular to that direction. The required experimental two-dimensional displacement components at the plate edge are measured by 3D Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (3D SLDV). It is demonstrated that S0 mode can be extracted very well from the signal but A0 mode with slightly poorer accordance with the original waveforms and numerical predictions.

Damage detection in bent plates using shear horizontal guided waves

Nakash Nazeer; Madis Ratassepp; Zheng Fan

HighlightsInvestigation of the shear horizontal wave for the inspection of defects in top hat stiffener. The curvature effect on the SH wave is analyzed. The sensitivity of SH wave to different defects is discussed. ABSTRACT Study of the interaction of shear horizontal guided mode with defects in the bend region of an isotropic top hat stiffener is presented. Compared with the SH0 wave in a plate, the shear mode in the bend is dispersive and its wavefield characteristics are affected by the curvature of the bend. The scattering studies showed that the sensitivity of the wave to outer surface cracks in the bend increases with increasing frequency compared to inner surface cracks. Further numerical simulations demonstrated that the shear mode is sensitive to the delamination in the bend due to non‐zero transverse shear stress. Results of finite element modeling were validated by experiments and reasonably good agreements were obtained.

On-Line Corrosion Monitoring of Plate Structures Based on Guided Wave Tomography Using Piezoelectric Sensors

Jing Rao; Madis Ratassepp; Danylo Lisevych; Mahadhir Hamzah Caffoor; Zheng Fan

Corrosion is a major safety and economic concern to various industries. In this paper, a novel ultrasonic guided wave tomography (GWT) system based on self-designed piezoelectric sensors is presented for on-line corrosion monitoring of large plate-like structures. Accurate thickness reconstruction of corrosion damages is achieved by using the dispersive regimes of selected guided waves and a reconstruction algorithm based on full waveform inversion (FWI). The system makes use of an array of miniaturised piezoelectric transducers that are capable of exciting and receiving highly dispersive A0 Lamb wave mode at low frequencies. The scattering from transducer array has been found to have a small effect on the thickness reconstruction. The efficiency and the accuracy of the new system have been demonstrated through continuous forced corrosion experiments. The FWI reconstructed thicknesses show good agreement with analytical predictions obtained by Faraday’s law and laser measurements, and more importantly, the thickness images closely resemble the actual corrosion sites.

Feature guided waves (FGW) in fiber reinforced composite plates with 90° transverse bends

Xudong Yu; Madis Ratassepp; Zheng Fan; Prabhakaran Manogharan; Prabhu Rajagopal

Fiber reinforced composite materials have been increasingly used in high performance structures such as aircraft and large wind turbine blades. 90◦ composite bends are common in reinforcing structural elements, which are prone to defects such as delamination, crack, fatigue, etc. Current techniques are based on local inspection which makes the whole bend area scanning time consuming and tedious. This paper explores the feasibility of using feature guided waves (FGW) for rapid screening of 90◦ composite laminated bends. In this study, the behavior of the bend-guided wave in the anisotropic composite material is investigated through modal studies by applying the Semi-Analytical Finite Element (SAFE) method, also 3D Finite Element (FE) simulations are performed to visualize the results and to obtain cross validation. To understand the influence of the anisotropy, three-dimensional dispersion surfaces of the guided modes in flat laminated plates are obtained, showing the dependence of the phase velocity with ...
