A HISTOPATHOLOGICAL ASPECT ON THE PROBLEM OF THE AUTONOMIC UNBALANCE

Osamu Morimoto; Magojiro Maekawa

The problzm on the autonomic unbalance has been discussed since many years, the concepts concerning this clinical phenomena being developzd with the t ims . In 1892, von Noorden called for the first time attention to the clinical condition associated with increased vagus irritability which he designated vagus neurosis. More active role on this region was pcrformed by H. Eppinger and L. Hess 1). Based on the observation on the effects of pilocarpine, atropine and adrenin, they settle3 there clinical classification : vagotonia and sympatheticotonia. But Petren and Thorling 2) pointed out later on that there is exhibited an exaggerated sympathetic tonus in certain diszaszs such as gastric and duodenal ulcer, diseases with apparently much exaggerated parasympathetic tonus usually. Therefore, it becomes right difficult to separate vagotonia from sympatheticotonia by merit of these drugs. So, v . Bergmann expressed the condition of autonomic unbalance by the concept “ vegetativ Stigmatisierte ”. Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system seem to be rather synergic than antagonistic with regard to one biological aim. In view of such physiological and clinical observation, the morphological comparison betw’en the Nucleus intermediolateralis superior (the lateral horn i as thz spinal sympathetic center and the Nucleus intermedio-lateralis inferior and the dorsal motor nucleus of vagus as the parasympathetic center must be a matter of urgent significance so far.

Techniques in Semi-Quantitative ATP-ase Histochemistry With Paraffin Setions

Kimiaki Nakamoto; Magojiro Maekawa; Koichi Ogino; Shunji Motomura

Uncontrollable factors in semi-quantitative ATP-ase histochemistry was avoided by handling 2 or 3 tissue specimens together from fixation side by side through embedding to mounting. This technique was employed in ATP-ase histochemistry of blood vessels in albino rats and experimental atheroma in rabbits.

In this report we present a case of primary pulmonary hypertension associated with giant thrombus of the right main pulmonary artery confirmed by autopsy. The patient had had signs and symptoms probably due to slight right heart failure for the past 5 years, then developed exertional dyspnea evidently indicating the occurrence of pulmonary hypertension 2 years ago. Microscopic examination revealed primary pulmonary hypertension with occlusive vascular changes in the muscular pulmonary arteries and arterioles of both lungs. The authors emphasize that, when there is a giant thrombus of the main pulmonary arteries, attention should be paid to the presence of striking vascular changes in the muscular pulmonary arteries and arterioles.
