Fuzzy Control of Brushless Excitation System for Steam Turbogenerators

Mahit Gunes; Necati Dogru

This paper describes the control of fully automatic fuzzy-based algorithm for rotating diode excitation system for steam turbogenerators. The fuzzy controller was designed by using microcontroller unit having the selectable voltage and power factor modes. The designed excitation control system has been used instead of the old conventional excitation system. As a case study, 6 MW steam turbogenerator has been controlled and protected according to the capability curve and limitation values supplied by the manufacturer.

Yunus Çelik; Mustafa Tekin; Mustafa Şekkeli; Mahit Gunes

This paper presents an application of human tracking suitcase with the help of a small camera. This application aimed to make the travels more comfortable. The heavy suitcases can be difficult to carry for most of us and disabled. Under favor of this application, people can travel without thinking about heavy suitcases anymore. This application contains two technical stages as image processing and control. Motor control of the suitcase has been done by using motion information. The suitcase can track colorful objects with the help of the camera which is located on the handlebar. In this project, we developed a tracking algorithm that gives better results than single color tracking. Distance sensors are also used to escape from obstacles. This travel mate is also trustable because when the unit cannot catch the person anymore, the alarm starts to warn the owner. As a result, when a suitcase combined with this designed unit, suitcases are no longer a problem to carry during the travel.

This paper presents a comparison of the success of Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) based PID and classic PID over speed control of DC motors. Motors known as a component that convert electrical energy to mechanical energy are quite common in our devices. DC motors are one of the most used components of industry. DC motors have two important advantages as speed variation and torque. Generally, speed variation is performed by changing armature voltage. In this paper, speed control of a DC motor and mathematical model of DC motor were presented. The performances of the control methods used in this study in DC motor speed control have been examined and supported with graphs by testing under different inputs, noise and load at certain times. The performance measures of the controllers were evaluated taking into consideration the rise time, the settling time and the overshoot.

Color based moving object tracking with an active camera using motion information

Yunus Çelik; Mahmut Altun; Mahit Gunes

In this study, a real-time system design, which can track (RGB) targets in dynamic environments with an active camera, was implemented. Object tracking applications are quite important for military, surveillance system and operational robot applications and getting more important day by day. This design allows us tracking an object using fewer cameras. The design consists of three main parts that are object detection, mapping, tracking the object. When the camera catches the object, first it detects the shape of the object and creates bounding box, according to bounding box information, the algorithm calculates the centroid of the object. Object coordinates are determined using centroid of the object then tracking process works by activating motors via Arduino-MATLAB communication. The motors placed on a platform called pan-tilt platform. The platform can turn 270 and 180 degrees on×and y-axis respectively.

A study on EMI shielding effectiveness of graphene based structures

Mahmut Altun; İbrahim Karteri; Mahit Gunes

Following the rapid development of technology, various electrical and electronic devices have been a great part of life day by day due to make human life easier and comfortable. However, they emit electromagnetic radiations causing the electromagnetic pollution. Depending on this role, electromagnetic pollution becomes a crucial problem for humanity, environment, and negatively effected the performance of electronic devices because of the electromagnetic interference. In order to prevent the unwanted signals, we have produced a graphene based polymer composites (light weight, strong, flexible), graphene/wood-plastic (G/WP), as a shielding material and investigated its electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE). Four combination of G/WP is observed with different (% 0, % 3, % 6, % 9 wt) graphene rates in 8-9 GHz frequency range. As a result, the shielding success has been attributed to the graphene increase in composite. The results claim that G/WP composites can efficiently take place in electronics technology and electronic protection.

Detecting Direction of Pepper Stem by Using CUDA-Based Accelerated Hybrid Intuitionistic Fuzzy Edge Detection and ANN

Mahit Gunes; Hasan Badem

In recent years, computer vision systems have been used in almost every field of industry. In this study, image processing algorithm has been developed by using CUDA (GPU) which is 79 times faster than CPU. We had used this accelerated algorithm in destemming process of pepper. 65 percent of total national production of pepper is produced in our cities, Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep in Turkey. Firstly, hybrid intuitionistic fuzzy algorithm edge detection has been used for preprocessing of original image and Otsu method has been used for determining automatic threshold in this algorithm. Then the multilayer perceptron artificial neural network has been used for the classification of patterns in processed images. Result of ANN test for detection direction of pepper has shown high accuracy performance in CPU-based implementation and in GPU-based implementation.

Accelerated intuitionistic fuzzy edge detection algorithm by using CUDA

Hasan Badem; Eyup Yalcin; Mahit Gunes

Intuitionistic fuzzy edge detection (IFED) algorithm has been used in the signification or characterization of images. IFED algorithm has been designed by the experts and the algorithm provides to aim to minimize errors of them. To be applicable in parallel of IFED is pave the way for accelerating of algorithm by performing in the graphics card. In this study, IFED algorithm was tested by transferring different size images to graphics cards which has different computing capacity via Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) programming environment which is manufactured by NVIDIA. Parallel model of the algorithm adapted to CUDA platform, compared to serial application running on processor, and has seen that shortened runtime at least 67 times, most 641 times.

Eyup Yalcin; Hasan Badem; Mahit Gunes

Intuitionistic fuzzy edge detection algorithm has been used for the signification or characterization of images. It has been designed by experts and the algorithm provides to aim to minimize errors. However, it has a fixed value for thresholding. In this paper, a hybrid algorithm has been developed using the Otsu method which is calculated a threshold value depending on the images. To be applicable in parallel of intuitionistic fuzzy edge algorithm is pave the way for accelerating of algorithm by performing in the graphics card. Intuitionistic fuzzy logic edge detection algorithm has been tested by transferring different size images to graphics cards which has different computing capacity via Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) programming environment which is manufactured by NVIDIA. Parallel model of the algorithm adapted to CUDA platform, compared to serial application running on processor, and has seen that shortened runtime at least 67 times, most 639 times.

In recent years, as a result of the rapid growth of energy demand in the regions where the majority of the rivers has increased quite interested in the hydroelectric power plants. A hydroelectric power plant consists of hydraulic turbines, consisting of generators and speed regulation system. Function of the speed regulation system provide to give instantaneously requested energy from depending on the interconnected system. The function of the speed regulator in the system is set the position of the setting wings that control the amount of water entering the hydraulic turbine. Speed regulators are controlled by reference to the active power and frequency parameters of the system. In this study, it has been created model of a hydroelectric power plant and has been obtained transfer function of the entire system. Fuzzy-PID controller PID controller is supplied to the speed regulation system. According to obtained simulation results, it is observed that fuzzy –PID controller provides better speed response than PI controller.
