Links between sustainability and technology development

This article presents important official statements on the role of technology in sustainable development, such as some supporting cleaner production, sustainable development strategy, and the Environmental Technologies Action Plan (ETAP) of the European Union (EU). The author shows that sustainability entails more than using environmentally friendly technologies and products to achieve economic growth. The framework of sustainability implies that the impacts of a technology should be assessed using methods such as Constructive Technology Assessment (CTA) at the global and local levels to improve positive effects. The author refers to the case of pervasive computing as an area requiring such assessment.

Participatory methods: a tool for the improvement of innovative environmental technologies

This paper discusses participatory methods as a tool with which to overcome some underlying barriers to the development of innovative environmental technologies. These methods may not only promote a better comprehension of societys needs and an improved understanding of user requirements, but also generate discussions and cooperation between relevant groups (industrial scientists, members of the scientific community, company managers, politicians, assessors, investors, etc.). Participatory approaches with transparent and clearly defined goals, a well-organised process and the integration of relevant policy fields can contribute to successful communication between actors in the interest of the development of innovative environmental technologies.

Navigieren in Richtung Responsible Research and Innovation: Governanceprinzipien zur strategischen Reflexion

Das Konzept ‚Responsible Research and Innovation‘ und dessen Akronym ‚RRI‘ hat in den letzten Jahren eine bemerkenswerte Dynamik entfaltet: ausgehend insbesondere von den Debatten um responsible development in der Nanotechnologie zu Beginn der 2000er Jahre erreicht RRI im akademischen Diskurs über Forschung und Innovation (FuI) inzwischen eine beachtliche Aufmerksamkeit (vgl. Rip 2014) und hat sich als Querschnittthema im laufenden Forschungsrahmenprogramm Horizont 2020 der Europäischen Union etabliert (vgl. European Commission 2014).

Neue Schwerpunkte für die technische Ausbildung im 21. Jahrhundert

Technische Ausbildung wurde im Laufe des Industrialisierungsprozesses an der Schnittstelle zwischen Industrie, Handwerk, Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft, Kunst sowie Politik und Militar entwickelt und institutionalisiert. Die technologische Entwicklung wurde dabei zunehmend komplexer und erhohte den Bedarf an kontinuierlicher Optimierung der Ausbildung. Der Arbeitsaufwand der Ingenieure/-innen wird heute einerseits durch die Globalisierung und Beschleunigung der Wirtschaft und andererseits durch die immer komplexeren sozio-okonomischen und umweltrelevanten Probleme auf Makroebene erhoht. Technische Ausbildung fur eine nachhaltige Entwicklung muss sich heute neben diesen Herausforderungen, auch mit der Tatsache beschaftigen, dass ein Teil der Probleme wie hohere Umwelt- und Sicherheitsrisiken, erhohter Ressourcenverbrauch sowie ungleiche Chancen bei der Nutzung neuer Technologien durch unerwunschte Effekte der technischen Erneuerungen entstehen. Dabei wird von Ingenieuren/-innen erwartet, dass sie Innovationen bevorzugen und strategische Entscheidungen in betrieblichen und kommunalen Bereichen unterstutzen, die sozial robuster und umweltfreundlicher als andere Losungen sind.

World-Wide Views on Global Warming Austria – Ein Prozess Partizipativer Technikfolgenabschätzung am Beispiel Globaler Erwärmung – Endbericht

Der Klimawandel weist neue Problemqualitaten wie Globalitat, Ursache-Wirkungsentkoppelung, Dringlichkeit, Unsicherheit und Komplexitat auf, die nicht nur die Wissenschaft sondern auch die Politik vor grose Herausforderungen stellen. Vor diesem Hintergrund gewinnen weltweite Verhandlungsprozesse an Bedeutung, denn globale Herausforderungen erfordern globales Entscheiden. Dies bedeutet auch die Entwicklung neuer Kommunikationsstrategien, Meinungsbildungsverfahren und Entscheidungswege, wozu das Projekt World Wide Views on Global Warming (kurz: WWViews) einen Beitrag geleistet hat.

Integration of technical universities into the learning networks of sustainable cities

Technical universities are influenced by social values related to the need for technological development and education. In return they influence society through the generation of knowledge, educating engineers, and interaction with the local community and international organizations, as well as through consumption of natural resources and generation of waste and emissions. They influence cities in their neighbourhoods, even if they are sometimes not strongly socially integrated into them. This presentation will discuss the requirements for the integration of technical universities into cities from the perspective of sustainable development. The contribution will include a discussion of the role of technical universities for future technological development depending on the needs and requirements of society. The contribution includes three main functions of universities, namely teaching, research and management.
