A new NMR technique capable of measuring small isotope effects on equilibrium was applied to the 2,3-dimethyl-2(2-/sup 13/C)butylium ion. The dilabeled species (2,3-/sup 13/C) was used to provide the reference peak. 2,3-dimethyl-2-butanol was used as the precursor; the ions were produced by a molecular beam technique. (DLC)
