An evaluation was made of the clinical and hematological aspects of 115 dogs infected naturally by Hepatozoon sp. and treated at the Hospital School of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Uberlândia, MG, Brazil. Of the 115 dogs for whom peripheral blood films were evaluated, 89 (77.39%) presented parasitemia by Hepatozoon sp. solely, while 26 (22.61%) had combination of Hepatozoon sp., Babesia sp. and Ehrlichia sp. Young male dogs less than a year old, of undefined breed (UB), were the most commonly affected. Thirty-nine (33.92%) of the dogs were asymptomatic while 76 (66.08%) presented varied clinical symptoms, the most frequent being anorexia, pulmonary alterations, hyperthermia, pale mucosae, apathy and/or prostration, and diarrhea. The majority of hematological alterations were normochromic-normocytic anemia, leukocytosis, neutrophilia, and nuclear deviation of neutrophils to the left (NDNL). The findings of this study confirm that Hepatozoon sp. causes clinical and hematological alterations of varied intensity, which, albeit not specific to canine hepatozoonosis, reinforce the notion that the discovery of the agent in dogs, even with low parasitemia, should be taken into consideration.

The purpose of this work was to verify the temporal dependence of monthly rainfall in the climatological station of Uberaba-MG, Brazil, using geostatistical methods. It was evaluated the precipitation in series of rainfall monthly data from 1914 to 2000. It were done exploratory and geostatistical analysis. The exploratory analysis was made by calculating basic statistics and histograms and the geostatistical analysis was made by semivariogram. According to the results, a normality tendence was verified in months from october to march. From april to September, it was verified an asymmetric tendence. Semivaviograms showed the nugget effect. As a conclusion, these variables did not present spatial dependence and statistical inferences can be made assuming temporal independence.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Studies of the condyle-mandibular fossa relationship are common, although the role of this relationship in the development of a temporomandibular disorder remains controversial. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the condyle-mandibular fossa relationship in young individuals with intact dentitions and compare it to that between individuals with and without symptoms of temporomandibular disorder. MATERIAL AND METHODS Volunteers were classified as asymptomatic (n=20) or symptomatic (n=20) according to research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders. Each participant underwent 2 cone beam-computed tomography scans of the middle and lower third of the face: 1 scan of the maximum intercuspation position and 1 of the centric relationship position. The distance between the condyle and mandibular fossa was measured on frontal and lateral images of the temporomandibular joint. The condylar position was compared across groups (asymptomatic, symptomatic) by using the Mann-Whitney U test (α=.05). Within each group, the condylar position was compared across maximum intercuspation and centric relationship positions by using the Mann-Whitney U test (α=.05). RESULTS No statistically significant differences were found in condylar positions between centric relationships and maximum intercuspation in either asymptomatic or symptomatic young adults, and no significant differences were found between asymptomatic and symptomatic young adults. CONCLUSIONS The condyle-mandibular fossa relationships of these young adults were similar in the centric relationships and maximum intercuspation positions when evaluated by computed tomography. The presence or absence of temporomandibular disorder was not correlated with the condyle position in the temporomandibular joint.

This study aims to record the first occurrence in Brazil of the parasitoid pupae Trichospilus diatraeae (Cherian & Margabandhu, 1942) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) on the melonworm, Diaphania hyalinata (L.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The specie T. diatraeae has been reported in pests of the soursop in the Distrito Federal, Brazil and eucalyptus in the Brazilian States of Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo. In the production system of pumpkin D. hyalinata is recognized as a significant pest which causes serious losses as a result of injuries caused in different parts of the plant. The occurrence of the parasitoid was recorded in pupae collected in the field, located on the campus of the Center of Agrarian Sciences, Federal University of Espirito Santo, Alegre Espirito Santo State, Brazil.

Tomato postharvest losses are very high in Brazil and the goal of this research was to evaluate the effect of handling and the transport of tomato fruits, cultivar Romana on the steps of harvesting, weight and transportation to the packinghouse, pointing some critical points. Tomatoes were harvested at plastic boxes, weighted and shipped to a packinghouse. Fruits taken directly from the plant were determined as reference. The parameters evaluated were weight loss and mechanical injury and tomato physical quality after storage during 21 days. It was observed an increasing on the weight loss, external damage, and postharvest losses, after storage. Handling and transportation were the cause of an increase in 6.6% in external damage and 1.93% of weight loss after storage, when comparing harvested fruits and fruits evaluated on the packing-house. The main reason for postharvest losses was due to mechanical injury caused during transportation mainly due to the compressure force among fruits and against the plastic boxes.

The Terminal Markets are the main centers for distribution of vegetables, fruits and flowers from different States of Brazil. The CEAGESP wholesalers can be shippers or growers. The amount of tomato commercialized in these terminal markets is very expressive. It was possible to determine the profile and the main features of the wholesale market at CEAGESP. About 45.8% of the wholesalers had an average commercialization volume of 10,000 tons/year, and 70.8% of them commercialize their own production. Cultivars Carmen and Debora were the leaders on the market. The results pointed out that wholesalers had more than one type of buyer, and the main ones were street fair and supermarkets. Most of the tomato is commercialized in boxes (box K), followed by 20.8% of plastic boxes and 16.7% of cardboard packages. CEAGESP wholesalers adopt tomato classification, either done manually (58.4%), or by machines (8.3%) or using both systems (33.3%). The standardization index was not satisfactory, with color and sizes in different degrees, and therefore 45.8% has to be reclassified.

Replacement of corn by citrus pulp or coffee hulls explores the potential of dairy cows to digest fiber-rich feedstuffs. However, for the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, replacing citrus pulp by coffee hulls may reduce milk production costs, since citrus pulp needs to be imported from another state, while coffee hulls are highly available at essentially no cost. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the performance of crossbred cows fed concentrates containing 25% coffee hulls (Coffee) or 25% citrus pulp (Pulp) as a replacement for ground corn grain (Corn; 47.4% in the concentrate). Forty-two cows were blocked based on milk yield and allocated to one of the three treatments for 56 days, following a 14-day standardization period. Concentrates were fed twice a day during the milking routine, 1 kg to each 2.5 kg of the average milk yield for the block, determined at the end of the standardization period. The daily 3.5% fat-corrected milk yield was 7.5 kg for Corn, 7.9 kg for Pulp and 6.2 kg for Coffee (P 0.26). The Pulp concentrate provided the highest financial efficiency, while Coffee was the least efficient (P < 0.01). These data suggest that the potential of use of coffee hulls is low when added at rates equal to or greater than 25% of the concentrate offered during the milking routine.

This research was carried out to study agronomic and morphological fruit characteristics of eleven sweet pepper hybrids obtained under protected cultivation conditions. The trial was conducted from November/95 to July/96 in Campinas, Sao Paulo state, Brazil. The treatments consisted of eleven hybrids which were grouped according to fruit colour, as red (Luis, Fresco, Juncal and XPH-14187), yellow (Indalo and Rupia), orange (Mandarin and Orange Wonder), purple (Cardinal and Lilac) and ivory hybrid (Ivory) groups. The following characteristics were evaluated: plant yield during one hundred days of harvest, and weight, length, width and pulp thickness of the first five marketable fruits per plant. Fresco and Luis hybrids produced the greatest yield whereas Lilac and Orange Wonder hybrids produced the lowest yield. All other hybrids displayed an intermediate performance. The greatest pulp thickness was observed in Ivory, Orange Wonder and Rupia hybrids, which differed significantly from Juncal, Luis and Cardinal hybrids. Fresco and Rupia hybrids showed the best performance in the red and yellow fruit groups, respectively.
