Teaching and Learning about Railroad Tourism through Educational Games

Carla Conceição Lana Fraga; Marcio Peixoto de Sequeira Santos; Sergio de Castro Ribeiro

The use of educational games is a longstanding practice in various fields of knowledge. However, there have been few initiatives to develop techniques and methods for educational games specifically focused on teaching about tourism, such as railroad tourism. The aim of this paper is to describe the experience acquired in developing and using learning games involving railroad tourism. The study is exploratory and descriptive and the results indicate the importance of adequate contextualization of the game with the reality of the student players.

Development of a software for metric studies of transportation engineering journals

Ercilia de Stefano; Marcio Peixoto de Sequeira Santos; Ronaldo Balassiano

This study intends to describe the development and results of a software designed to analyze millions of articles in the area of Transportation Engineering. This tool intends to support Transportation Planning activities by providing additional information about trends, references and technologies. In order to develop this software, techniques from scientometrics, bibliometrics and informetrics were employed with the support of tools from Computer Science, such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining and Natural Language Processing. The result of this study is a structured database that allows browsing the change of interest in different topics along the years in areas related to Transportation Engineering. When analyzing a given area, the database is capable of identifying which authors published works in that area, allowing the identification of specialists and related papers. In addition, the software responsible for creating this database is capable of performing the same analysis in academic corpora of other areas of study.

Methodology for assessment of the atmospheric pollution caused by road traffic in urban areas

Sergio Chiquetto; Marcio Peixoto de Sequeira Santos

This work presents a methodology for assessment of the atmospheric contamination caused by road traffic, based on the maximum global vehicular emission admissible to be thrown upon an urban area atmosphere. The proposed methodology was tested in an urban area of Rio de Janeiro and three further scenarios were set up to analyze the sensitivity of some variables influencing the atmospheric pollution process.

Research trends in urban transport science: Some empirical evidence from academic research☆

Marcio Peixoto de Sequeira Santos; M.G. de C. Braga

Abstract The field of urban transport planning is now established as a scientific activity. Its historical evolution shows an intense search for the appropriate methodological approach, in view of the significant changes on the nature of the transport problem. This relationship between methodology and problem is studied on the basis of Kuhns theory for scientific progress. Changes in paradigm are detected and analysed through the use of data from academic research leading for higher degrees in both the United Kingdom and the United States for a period of 20 years (1962–1981). A number of different classifications are proposed. The results of the analysis suggest that research in transport is passing through a transition phase, or paradigm shift, and that coping with the increasing level of complexity of the transport problem is the next step forward.
