Entangling measurements for multiparameter estimation with two qubits

Careful tailoring the quantum state of probes offers the capability of investigating matter at unprecedented precisions. Rarely, however, the interaction with the sample is fully encompassed by a single parameter, and the information contained in the probe needs to be partitioned on multiple parameters. There exist, then, practical bounds on the ultimate joint-estimation precision set by the unavailability of a single optimal measurement for all parameters. Here, we discuss how these considerations are modified for two-level quantum probes — qubits — by the use of two copies and entangling measurements. We find that the joint estimation of phase and phase diffusion benefits from such collective measurement, while for multiple phases no enhancement can be observed. We demonstrate this in a proof-of-principle photonics setup.

We experimentally demonstrate a source of nearly pure single photons in arbitrary temporal shapes heralded from a parametric down-conversion (PDC) source at telecom wavelengths. The technology is enabled by the tailored dispersion of in-house fabricated waveguides with shaped pump pulses to directly generate the PDC photons in on-demand temporal shapes. We generate PDC photons in Hermite-Gauss and frequency-binned modes and confirm a minimum purity of 0.81, even for complex temporal shapes.

Experimental method for measuring classical negativity of generic beam shapes

Emanuele Roccia; Ilaria Gianani; Luca Mancino; Marco Sbroscia; I Miatka; Fabrizia Somma; M. Barbieri

Classical entanglement is a powerful tool which provides a neat numerical estimate for the study of classical correlations. Its experimental investigation, however, has been limited to special cases. Here, we demonstrate that the experimental quantification of the level of classical entanglement can be carried out in more general instances. Our approach enables the extension to arbitrarily shaped transverse modes and hence delivering a suitable quantification tool to describe concisely the modal structure.

Multiparameter approach to quantum phase estimation with limited visibility

Optical sensors based on quantum light need to work even in the presence of imperfections. Here we discuss how to address the presence of noise by measuring multiple parameters at once: those we seek to monitor and those linked to the imperfections. Our method is applied to the investigation of the optical activity of sugary solutions limited by reduced visibility. These studies introduce multiparameter estimation as a viable approach to allow for robust operation of quantum sensors as they are developed from fundamental research to technology.Emanuele Roccia,1 Valeria Cimini,1 Marco Sbroscia,1 Ilaria Gianani,1 Ludovica Ruggiero,1 Luca Mancino,1 Marco G. The crystal structure of ferrinatrite, Na3[Fe(SO4)3]·3H2O, was refined based on a new single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiment on a sample from the type locality Sierra Gorda, Chile. The data allowed H to be successfully located and the H-bonding system to be defined. Infrared and Raman spectra are presented and discussed for this compound on the basis of the crystal structure. The Oacceptor···H–Odonor bond distances determined from the structure refinement agree well with the geometric correlation obtained from spectroscopic data. The thermal stability and dehydration process of ferrinatrite was investigated by in situ high temperature (HT) synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies.

Realism-information complementarity in photonic weak measurements

Luca Mancino; Marco Sbroscia; Emanuele Roccia; Ilaria Gianani; Valeria Cimini; Mauro Paternostro; M. Barbieri

The emergence of realistic properties is a key problem in understanding the quantum-to-classical transition. In this respect, measurements represent a way to interface quantum systems with the macroscopic world: these can be driven in the weak regime, where a reduced back-action can be imparted by choosing meter states able to extract different amounts of information. Here we explore the implications of such weak measurement for the variation of realistic properties of two-level quantum systems pre- and post-measurement, and extend our investigations to the case of open systems implementing the measurements.

What Hong-Ou-Mandel interference says on two-photon frequency entanglement

M. Barbieri; Emanuele Roccia; Luca Mancino; Marco Sbroscia; Ilaria Gianani; Fabio Sciarrino

Not much, in the end. Here we put forward some considerations on how Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry provides signatures of frequency entanglement in the two-photon state produced by parametric down-conversion. We find that some quantitative information can be inferred in the limit of long-pulse pumping, while the short-pulse limit remains elusive.

Monitoring dispersive samples with single photons: the role of frequency correlations

Emanuele Roccia; Marco G. Genoni; Luca Mancino; Ilaria Gianani; Marco Barbieri; Marco Sbroscia

Abstract The physics that governs quantum monitoring may involve other degrees of freedom than the ones initialised and controlled for probing. In this context we address the simultaneous estimation of phase and dephasing characterizing a dispersive medium, and we explore the role of frequency correlations within a photon pair generated via parametric down-conversion, when used as a probe for the medium. We derive the ultimate quantum limits on the estimation of the two parameters, by calculating the corresponding quantum Cramér-Rao bound; we then consider a feasible estimation scheme, based on the measurement of Stokes operators, and address its absolute performances in terms of the correlation parameters, and, more fundamentally, of the role played by correlations in the simultaneous achievability of the quantum Cramér- Rao bounds for each of the two parameters.
