Manihot appanii (Euphorbiaceae s. s.), a New Species from Brazil, and a Key to the Species with Unlobed or Very Shortly Lobed Leaves

Marcos José da Silva

Abstract A new species of Manihot from Brazil was discovered in the course of revising the taxonomy of species of the genus with unlobed or very shortly lobed leaves. Manihot appanii is herein described and illustrated. Its relationships with M. stricta and M. saxatilis, the morphologically most similar species, are discussed, as well as its geographical distribution and conservation status. A key to the species of Manihot with unlobed or shortly lobed leaves is also provided.

A Dwarf Species of Manihot Mill. (Euphorbiaceae s. s.) from the Highlands of Goiás, Brazil

Marcos José da Silva; Rodolfo Carneiro Sodré

Abstract During the preparation of the Euphorbiaceae taxonomic treatment for the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, located in the state of Goiás, Brazil, we found a new species of Manihot. Manihot saxatilis is described and illustrated here. The morphological relationship of this species is discussed in comparison with M. stricta Baill., since we assume this species is the most morphologically similar to the new one. Based on morphological traits, the new species belongs to Manihot sect. Brevipetiolatae. The distribution, habitat, phenology, etymology, IUCN red list category, and a key to all species of Manihot sect. Brevipetiolatae are also provided.

Manihot veadeirensis (Euphorbiaceae s. s.): A New Species from the Brazilian Cerrado

Marcos José da Silva

Abstract Manihot veadeirensis, from Chapada dos Veadeiros, Goiás, Brazil, is described, illustrated, and assigned to Manihot section Quinquelobae. This new species is similar to Manihot mossamedensis, differing from it in the gamosepalous calyx of its pistillate flowers, lanceolate, persistent, and uninerved bracts and bracteoles, exserted staminate flowers, and wingless capsules. The distribution, habitat, conservation status, and systematic position of the new species are presented. A key to all species of Manihot section Quinquelobae is also provided.

A New Species of Croton L. (Euphorbiaceae s.s.) from the Brazilian Cerrado

Marcos José da Silva; Rodolfo Carneiro Sodré; Margareth Ferreira de Sales

Abstract Croton planaltoanus, a new species from the Brazilian Cerrado, is described and illustrated here. The morphological relationships of this species are discussed in comparison with C. inaequilobus, an endemic species of the Chapada dos Veadeiros Region, which resembles the new species morphologically. The new species is apparently endemic to the Brazilian Cerrado region, where it grows in “cerrado rupestre” and montane grasslands on rocky soils. The systematic position of C. planaltoanus in relation to the sections of Croton is also discussed.

Rogers & Appan, M. gracilis Pohl, M. irwinii D.J. Rogers & Appan, M. mossamedensis Taub., M. oligantha Pax, M. paviifolia Pohl, M. pentaphylla Pohl, M. pentaphylla subsp. tenuifolia (Pohl) D.J. Rogers & Appan, M. sparsifolia Pohl e M. xavantinensis D.J. Rogers & Appan. Sao apresentados aqui descricoes, chave de identificacao, ilustracoes, distribuicao geografica, alem de comentarios acerca da morfologia e das preferencias ecologicas das especies analisadas. Manihot in Serra Dourada State Park, Goias, Brazil Abstract The Serra Dourada State Park comprises a mosaic of vegetation and it is one the most conserved and diverse mountainous areas of Goias state. To contribute to the flora of this park and with knowledge of Euphorbiaceae diversity in the Cerrado s.l. vegetation a taxonomic treatment of the genus Manihot is presented here. Eleven taxa arranged in nine species were recognized: M. anomala Pohl, M. anomala subsp. pubescens (Pohl) D.J. Rogers & Appan, M. gracilis Pohl, M. irwinii D.J. Rogers & Appan, M. mossamedensis Taub., M. oligantha Pax, M. paviifolia Pohl, M. pentaphylla Pohl, M. pentaphylla subsp. tenuifolia (Pohl) D.J. Rogers & Appan, M. sparsifolia Pohl and M. xavantinensis D.J. Rogers & Appan. Descriptions, illustrations, comments on morphological similarities, geographic distribution and ecological preferences of species, and a key to identify are provided.

Two New Brazilian Species of Phyllanthus (Phyllanthaceae)

Marcos José da Silva

Two new Brazilian species of Phyllanthus L. are described and illustrated and their morphological affinities are discussed. Phyllanthus longipedicellatus M. J. Silva resembles P. augustinii Baill. but differs by its leaves oblong-falcate to falcate-asymmetrical with margins obscurely serrulate, and pistillate flowers with patelliform disk. Phyllanthus salesiae M. J. Silva is similar to P. rosmarinifolius Müller Argoviensis but it differs from the latter by its lacerate stipules, deeply lobed pistillate disk, incurved and bifid style, and seeds with darkish punctations. Both species are endemic to Brazil and known only from a single locality. The systematic position of both species with regard to the sections and subsections of Phyllanthus is also discussed. Two new Brazilian species of Phyllanthus L. are described and illustrated and their morphological affinities are discussed.
