Collateral and Achievement: Land and Caribbean Migration

Margaret Byron

The colonial legacy of unequal land distribution remains very evident in the Caribbean region. As the colonial settlers appropriated land resources after eliminating the populations they encountered there, there was virtually no preexisting peasantry, and access to land by the slave and ex-slave populations and later imported indentured laborers was largely at the discretion of the plantocracy and the colonial state.
