The present article contains a brief review of the literature concerning auditory aging, describing studies on the effects of aging on temporal auditory processing, and more specifically, studies about the detection of gaps in sounds, by aging subjects. Definitions, descriptions, consequences and prevalence of presbycusis are discussed. Experimental procedures for research on temporal processing involving the detection of gaps in broadband noises, discrimination of sounds with temporal reversal, detection of sound amplitude changes, detection of gaps on narrowband sounds, detection of differences of duration between two stimuli, as well as the discrimination of the temporal order of different frequency channels composing complex tones are described. Additionally, studies describing the psychophysical characteristics of temporal auditory processing in elderly subjects are reviewed. Finally, suggestions about future directions of research are presented.

A fala humana e um som de grande complexidade, cujo processamento perceptual, producao e relacoes com a linguagem e a cognicao necessitam de uma analise integrada, tanto do ponto de vista do conhecimento disponivel como tambem das especificidades metodologicas. Neste artigo faz-se uma breve revisao da literatura sobre as principais aquisicoes e desenvolvimento da linguagem no primeiro ano de vida de bebes com desenvolvimento normal com enfoque na percepcao da fala humana. Busca-se, tambem, analisar a ocorrencia de disturbios auditivos que podem causar alteracoes na percepcao da fala, com possiveis implicacoes para o desenvolvimento pre-linguistico. Atencao especial e dada ao desenvolvimento da habilidade de percepcao de fala e de linguagem em bebes com sindrome de Down. E analisada a predisposicao, nesta populacao, a problemas audiologicos, sua relacao com alteracoes no desenvolvimento de linguagem, e a tendencia apresentada no primeiro ano de vida para padroes diferenciados de atencao a fala.

UNLABELLED Hearing thresholds are not always predictive of performance in environments with reduced extrinsic redundancy. OBJECTIVE To investigate the communication disorders reported by adults with normal hearing, and to assess their underlying conditions through behavioral and electrophysiological testing. METHOD This case control study enrolled 20 adults with normal hearing thresholds and divided them into two groups: a case group with 10 adults with hearing impairment-related communication disorders and a control group with 10 adults with normal hearing. The frequency of occurrence of communication difficulties was recorded during speech recognition tests run in quiet and noisy conditions, audiometry, and auditory evoked brainstem potential testing. RESULTS Case group subjects differed statistically from controls only in self-reported scores of hearing impairment. The groups did not differ in the other ratings. A positive correlation was found between hearing thresholds and scores on self-reported impairment. CONCLUSION The combination of hearing complaints and unaltered audiograms was not correlated with differences in performance in speech recognition testing in noisy conditions or in the remaining evaluations. Correlation analysis showed that the higher the pure tone thresholds, the greater were the reported communication difficulties, even in thresholds between 0 and 25 dB.

PURPOSE: To characterize the behavioral signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) from the perspective of the professionals who diagnose and manage these conditions in Brazil. METHODS: Forty-two health professionals in Brazil (medical doctors, speech therapists, psychologists, and pedagogues) participated in this study, and they responded to a questionnaire listing 58 behavioral signs of ADHD and CAPD. The participants were asked to score the listed behavioral signs according to the frequency with which they occurred, from 1 (never) to 5 (always). The average values were compared to the results of a similar study conducted in North America. RESULTS: Some of the listed behavioral signs were indicated more often than others, depending on the disorder. In the case of ADHD, the behavioral signs most often mentioned were difficulty playing quietly, distraction, disorganization, inattentiveness, hyperactivity, restlessness, shifting from one incomplete task to another, poor self-control, lack of persistence, and hastiness or impulsiveness. The most evident behavioral signs of CAPD were auditory divided attention deficit, auditory selective attention deficit, difficulty following instructions given orally, poor auditory association skills, difficulty hearing in a noisy environment, auditory sustained attention deficit, difficulty discriminating speech, and reduced auditory information processing rate. CONCLUSION: The health professionals identified some behavioral signs as being more evident in ADHD and other signs as more evident in CAPD.

[Esta referência de Darwin sugere seu contato com Princípios de Psicologia, publicado por Spencer em 1855, embora Boring (1950) situe na segunda edição desta obra de Spencer (cujos dois volumes foram publicados respectivamente em 1870 e 1872) a explicitação mais clara de sua contribuição para o associacionismo evolucionário.] Só em seus escritos posteriores Darwin efetivamente explicita suas concepções sobre a evolução do comportamento. The Descent of Man, e The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, são as duas obras em que estas idéias ocupam espaço próprio. A primeira edição de The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals foi publicada na Grã Bretanha em 1872, um ano depois da publicação de Descent of Man e treze anos depois de The Origin of Species. A despeito do interesse de Darwin em efetuar modificações ao texto, uma segunda edição só foi publicada em 1889, sete anos após sua morte, sob a supervisão de Francis Darwin, filho de Charles, o qual incluiu algumas das modificações indicadas por Charles. Reimpressões subsequentes, inclusive a edição de 1965 da Universidade de Chicago, que serviu de base à recente tradução da obra para o português pela Companhia das Letras, originaram-se da primeira edição inglesa. A organização de uma terceira edição em língua inglesa foi confiada a Paul Ekman, autoridade nas áreas de comunicação não verbal e de expressão facial das emoções em particular, cujo trabalho meticuloso acrescentou valor especial a este clássico por si só importante para o estudioso do comportamento.
