PURPOSE: To characterize the behavioral signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) from the perspective of the professionals who diagnose and manage these conditions in Brazil. METHODS: Forty-two health professionals in Brazil (medical doctors, speech therapists, psychologists, and pedagogues) participated in this study, and they responded to a questionnaire listing 58 behavioral signs of ADHD and CAPD. The participants were asked to score the listed behavioral signs according to the frequency with which they occurred, from 1 (never) to 5 (always). The average values were compared to the results of a similar study conducted in North America. RESULTS: Some of the listed behavioral signs were indicated more often than others, depending on the disorder. In the case of ADHD, the behavioral signs most often mentioned were difficulty playing quietly, distraction, disorganization, inattentiveness, hyperactivity, restlessness, shifting from one incomplete task to another, poor self-control, lack of persistence, and hastiness or impulsiveness. The most evident behavioral signs of CAPD were auditory divided attention deficit, auditory selective attention deficit, difficulty following instructions given orally, poor auditory association skills, difficulty hearing in a noisy environment, auditory sustained attention deficit, difficulty discriminating speech, and reduced auditory information processing rate. CONCLUSION: The health professionals identified some behavioral signs as being more evident in ADHD and other signs as more evident in CAPD.

Purpose: to investigate the suppressive effect of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions in subjects with tinnitus complaint and normal audiometry and to analyze the relation to age, gender, laterality of tinnitus and its degree of discomfort. Methods: we assessed 60 subjects, 14 males and 46 females, aged between 20 and 59 years, 30 with tinnitus (experimental group) and 30 without tinnitus complaint (control group). The suppression of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions was investigated with contralateral white noise at 50 dBHL at the frequency bands of 700, 1000, 1400, 2000, 2800 and 4000Hz. Results: the mean value for the suppression of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions in the experimental group ranged from 2.14 to 4.38. In the control group, the mean value for suppression of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions ranged from 2.27 to 4.88. Conclusion: suppression values of otoacoustic emissions were similar in subjects with and without tinnitus, although the results of the tinnitus group were lower, suggesting worse performance of the Superior Olivary Complex.

INTRODUCTION: The data submitted by the Center of Epidemiological Surveillance of the State of Sao Paulo indicates the number of children affected by infecto-contagious diseases increases yearly. Some of these diseases are considered to be of risk for hearing. OBJECTIVE: Check and compare the occurrence of risk indicators of the Hearing Loss during the interval of 10 years in a maternity of Sao Paulo. METHOD: Quantitative and retrospective study carried out from the research and review of data of registers supplied by a maternity of the city of Sao Paulo. We surveyed the registers of babies who were born from January through December of the years of 1995 (n=2.077) and 2005 (n=5.129), including those who had risk indicators for deafness and prematurity, low weight and asphyxia, besides having a diagnosis confirmed or suspicion of infecto-contagious diseases of group TORSCH-A. RESULTS: We reviewed reports of 565 children born in 1995, and 1047 born in 2005. Among the risk indicators of deafness, we noticed a significant difference for the indicator of prematurity and asphyxia and there was no significant difference for the low weight indicator. The risk indicators of prematurity, low weight and asphyxia were more frequent than Toxoplasmosis, Syphilis and HIV+. The children born in 1995 tended to have a higher number of risk indicators and/or diseases than those born in 2005 (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The major incidence of indicators in 1995 appoints an improvement to health that diminishes the index of newborns with risk of deafness along 10 years.
