economic historians. But it is important to note how Luciano Segreto wanted to go a step further, by enriching this history with an account of daily life and the incidental facts. In some ways, in an international context in which business and economic history often leans more towards cliometrics and statistical analysis, this book represents a counter-current choice in favouring a qualitative approach. It is decidedly rare today to find a book of economic history of almost 500 pages in which there is not even one table. However, absolutely fascinating research emerges, in which the entrepreneurial logics are also analysed in the framework of the subjectivities, the social connections, the family sensitivities. In particular, the research explores a path little known up to now in Italian history, but of major importance, since it acknowledges the fact that the Feltrinelli were one of the foremost dynasties of liberal Italy.

– By the end of the XVIIIth century and during the first three decades of the XIXth century, continental Portugal functioned as a vital commercial platform to satisfy the demand for colonial products in different European markets. This study, based on archival sources from Brazil, Portugal, and Hamburg, analyzes the importance of Brazilian products among Portuguese exports to Hamburg from 1796 to 1831, which consisted mainly of one product: sugar, both in its white and brown varieties. It also tries to show in how far Portugal profited from its position as intermediary between Brazil and Hamburg.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the extent to which new forms of capital are noticed by different members of nonprofit organizations (directors, employees, and volunteers) and valued as a factor of organizational capacity. Design/methodology/approach Using survey research methodology, the authors studied a nonprofit institution – a delegation of the Portuguese Red Cross located in Fafe, a city in northern Portugal, by giving a questionnaire to all its members. Findings The respondents revealed that the existence of other forms of capital (in addition to financial capital) is recognized and valued and that human capital as a whole is particularly relevant to the fulfillment of the Fafe Delegation of Portuguese Red Cross’ mission. Originality/value This is the first study on the perceptions of human capital, social capital and financial capital in a Portuguese nonprofit organization.
