A systematic review of scientific production on Prison Health was conducted, seeking to verify how the subject matter has been dealt with, establishing which is the most exploited focus and identifying possible gaps. The search was carried out in the Virtual Health Library. 1160 articles were located: 1104 on MEDLINE, 19 on LILACS and 37 on SciELO, published from 1993 to 2010. As MEDLINE and LILACS do not show the entire articles, the places, dates and languages of the texts were charted. In-depth analysis was restricted to works which were shown in their entirety and free of charge hosted on SciELO. It revealed that scientific production is present all over the world with a predominantly quantitative approach. It focuses on identifying the socio-demographic profile and health conditions of prisoners, the incidence of tuberculosis, Human Immunodeficiency and Hepatitis C virus infections. There is a predominance of studies carried out with male prisoners, in comparison with the female sex. It is clear that prisoner health is a public health problem on the rise, which demands research that can orient health policies and strategies.

AIM This article reports experiences of Brazilian physicians and nurses caring for women with postpartum depression in primary healthcare settings. BACKGROUND Prevalence of postpartum depression in Brazil ranges from 12-37%, which fits with international claims about differences in the magnitude of the problem and consistency of screening. DESIGN Qualitative descriptive. METHOD This study was situated in health units of the Family Health Strategy in Campina Grande, Brazil. Data were collected from September 2010-January 2011 through open-ended interviews with ten nurses and seven physicians, observations, and field diary records. Inductive content analysis was used to develop categories. FINDINGS Three categories: (1) Limited professional exposure to postpartum depression; (2) Postpartum depression as the domain of psychiatry; and (3) Challenges dealing with postpartum depression demonstrated that few professionals felt postpartum depression merited their attention. Women, with signs of postpartum depression, were usually identified by family members who noticed behaviours that seemed abnormal. Care providers indicated they had inadequate time and access to screening techniques to identify women with depression attending unit-based pregnancy and postpartum groups. When identified, women were referred directly to psychiatric care. CONCLUSION Without consistent screening and diagnostic techniques, Brazilian health professionals are insecure about identifying and treating cases of postpartum depression. Referring women to psychiatric units entail more time for women to be diagnosed and treated and increased costs for health services. Primary healthcare professionals require training to screen, identify, and treat postpartum depression in primary healthcare settings.

With the advances brought about by the process of the Psychiatric Reform , new challenges are being offered to professionals in the mental health network . To enable the practice proposed by the psychosocial model to become effective it is necessary for the educational institutions to be attentive to the professionals that they are shaping. This research aimed to understand the social representations of Nursing Care in Mental Health developed by graduates of undergraduate courses in Nursing from Campina Grande , PB . The sample consisted of 12 students who participated in semi -directive interviews. The speeches were subjected to content analysis. With regard to ethical considerations the study followed the guidelines established by Resolution number 196/96 and the Declaration of Helsinki. The nursing care in mental health is represented in the humanization of mental health care . This representation facilitates the change in the perception of graduates from the theoretical and practical experiences and allow them to view a distinction between the professional practice of the nurse in the current context and the role assigned to him/her in accordance with the principles of the Psychiatric Reform.

The Dance of Discoveries

Maria de Fátima de Araújo Silveira; Dulce Maria Rosa Gualda; Vera Regina Salles Sobral; Ademilda Maria de S. Garcia

The authors present the methodology used for collecting data developed through the use of the metaphor of dance. The tools were the workshops run in an Extension Course in Brazil given to nurses caring for women. The process is described as a meeting where the main objective reached was the collective construction of knowledge about the body of the women cared for. The socialization of experiences, the debate of ideas, the reflection about care permeated by solidarity and humanization, caring for the care-givers, reducing the asymmetry between researchers and researched — the dancers — went beyond merely generating data towards research.

This paper deals with qualitative research conducted in the Therapeutic Residency Service in the municipality of Campina Grande, State of Paraiba, Brazil, the objective being to ascertain the difficulties encountered by the professionals in the healthcare practices defined by the aforementioned service and identify the prospects identified by them for the residents. A semi-structured interview routine was conducted with ten professionals for the data collection, along with analysis of field records and systematic observation. The main difficulties faced are of a structural nature, namely lack of human resources and/or training and social support. Social reintegration, insertion in the workplace and autonomy are the expectations singled out by the professionals. In light of the results, it can be affirmed that, in spite of the difficulties experienced, it is possible to see progress, such as the autonomy of some residents. Nevertheless, as it is a recent service, it needs to be constantly evaluated.

Body and nursing: a delicate relationship
