Educating the information professional of the 21st century: A ten-point proposal based on the Spanish context

Francisco Javier García Marco; María del Carmen Agustín Lacruz

This paper analyses the changing environment of LIS education from a Spanish perspective and summarises some challenges that LIS educators and educational programme developers responsible for the information professional of the 21st century have to address in the near future. First, the state of the Spanish educational arena and the main trends in the LIS field are examined. Thereafter, some foci that must be urgently addressed in the educational programmes are isolated: Only by addressing changes in our curricula, by organising our disciplines in a strong theoretical corpus without sacrificing the achievements of the past and by putting the students at the centre of the educational process, will we be able to survive as educational and scientific agents in the new social information environment. These new foci are not seen as substituting previous educational emphasis in technical processes and technology, but as complementing them.

Ana Lúcia Terra; María del Carmen Agustín Lacruz; Mariangela Spotti Lopes Fujita

Research data on indexing policies in Brazilian and Portuguese school libraries are presented and dis26 cussed. Legal and organizational contexts regarding these types of libraries are briefly described. The collection 27 of empirical data was obtained by means of an inquiry that resulted in 150 questionnaires from Brazil and 406 28 from Portugal. Based on these samples, a generic identification of school libraries was carried out in terms of 29 teaching levels and institutional/geographical integration. The existence of a catalog in the libraries was also 30 determined. The use of the two main kinds of indexing languages (classification systems and verbal indexing 31 languages) were identified as well as the existence of manuals designed to guide indexing procedures. Refer32 ences are made to aspects related to the specificity and the number of terms/subjects selected for each docu33 ment and the use of indexing norms by comparing both Brazilian and Portuguese realities. 34 Received: 23 March 2016; Revised 25 March 2016; Accepted 29 March 2016-03-29 35
