Del registro al patrimonio, un camino con curvas cerradas. Gestión del patrimonio arqueológico y comunicación pública de la ciencia

Carolina I. Mariano; María Eugenia Conforti

The aim of this paper is to raise the relation between the Archaeological Heritage Management and the Public Communication of Archaeology. It is emphasized the need to democratize the results of scientific research and to recognize the impact of both communication and management of information. Finally, it is proposed a two-stage model to analyze the process by which archaeological materials become archaeological heritage. This model was developed from studies carried out since early 2007 in the center of the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina).

The Public Communication of Science and Non-Formal Education Within the Framework of Public Argentine Archaeology: The Case of Archaeology Workshops

María Eugenia Conforti; Patricia Madrid

Abstract This article presents and analyses a method of public communication in archaeology carried out by a group of researchers within a non-formal educational framework, as a contribution to public archaeology in Argentina. This project included diverse activities, such as archaeology workshops for children and teenagers, which took place in museums in four cities located in three regions: Paraná (North-east), Tres Arroyos and Lobería (Pampas), and Lamarque (Patagonia). A conceptual evaluation is presented based on the application of a non-participational observation methodology, that includes the analysis of posters made by those attending the workshop and surveys conducted by the archaeologists at the culmination of the activity. This study suggests that workshops can be one of the most effective strategies employed by researchers to publicly communicate archaeology, and therefore can be of use to other research teams that have as their objective the democratization of knowledge generated in scientific-academic spheres.

Making Cultural Heritage Significant for the Public. The Role of Researchers in Encouraging Public Awareness and Local Pride

María Luz Endere; María Gabriela Chaparro; María Eugenia Conforti

The municipality of Olavarría, Buenos Aires province, Argentina, has a rich, diverse, and ancient natural and cultural heritage, although this is not well known by the local community. For this reason, an itinerant exhibition was developed to promote public access to scientific information and community awareness concerning the importance of local heritage. This project was the starting point of an integral programme of public outreach and science education, whose main goal is to facilitate intellectual and physical access to academic knowledge by local communities. After seven years of development, several lessons have been learned, including the need to increase stakeholders’ participation and the exploration of new strategies of communication in order to engage different segments of the public.

World Heritage and the Local Community: The Case of Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain)

María Eugenia Conforti; J. Carlos Díez Fernández-Lomana; Mercedes Mariano; María Luz Endere; Antonio Alonso

As social constructions, heritage properties require the participation of all their stakeholders, especially in the case of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain) World Heritage Site is used as a test case for assessing the fulfilment of the local community’s development expectations, perceptions, and values. This paper is the first formal attempt to ascertain the opinions of residents in the surrounding villages — Ibeas de Juarros and Atapuerca — regarding the initiatives taken by the authorities, and the changes produced, since the site was included in the World Heritage List. The results show that many improvements can be made with the aim of democratizing the decision-making process, ensuring the involvement of the local community and improving their quality of life, in order to fulfil the spirit and recommendations of UNESCO.
