Proper site selection is fundamental in the success of any aquiculture enterprise. To identify suitable areas for freshwater prawn culture in Pernambuco, factors like elevation, relief, soil and climate were considered, in accordance with the species biology and pond construction. According to the established criteria, suitable, unsuitable and unfavorable areas, with some restrictions, were recognized. Suitable areas for freshwater prawn culture in Pernambuco are about 835 km2, representing 0.85% of the total area of the State.

Soil physicochemical characteristics reflect global and local processes influencing the distribution of plant formations. In this study, the existence of soil physicochemical patterns associated with mangrove tree species was investigated by means of physicochemical analysis of the soil in the species Rizhophora mangle, Laguncularia racemosa, Avicennia schaueriana and Conocarpus erectus . Principal Component Analysis was later performed using Pearsons correlation. The main components were the cation exchange capacity, sum of bases and clay in R. mangle ; hydrogen, coarse sand and magnesium in L. racemosa ; cation exchange capacity, phosphorus and silt in A. schaueriana ; potassium, calcium and coarse sand in C. erectus . The results suggest soil physicochemical patterns in the species. R. mangle and A. schaueriana showed similar soil physical characteristics and different chemical attributes, just as L. racemosa and C. erectus . Nutrient availability and cation exchange capacity were significant for R. mangle and A. schaueriana , and hydrogenionic potential for L. racemosa and granulometric composition for C. erectus , suggesting a physicochemical soil pattern.

O genero Lithadia Bell esta representado, no Brasil, por quatro especies: L. brasiliensis (von Martens, 1872), L. conica (Coelho, 1973), L. obliqua (Coelho, 1973) e L. vertiginosa (Coelho, 1973), todas endemicas para a costa brasileira. Lithadia rotundata, descrita por A. Milne Edwards (1880), esta referida, ate o momento, apenas para o litoral argentino. No material coligido durante o Projeto Crustaceos Decapodes da costa Riograndina, realizado entre marco de 1982 e dezembro de 1984, pelo N. Oc. “Atlântico Sul”, foram encontrados dois especimes machos de L. rotundata, coletados na estacao 17 do Cruzeiro 1, localizada a 32° 18’ 00” S: 51° 37’ 00” W, 21 metros de profundidade, substrato de areia, temperatura de 23,3°C e salinidade de 34 e encontram-se depositados na Colecao Carcinologica da Fundacao Universidade do Rio Grande (FURG).
