Maria Helena Monteiro de Barros Miotto; Jean Carlos Bazoni Silotti; Ludmilla Awad Barcellos

The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of dental pain, absenteeism induced by dental pain, and the association with socio-demographic characteristics. The research had a cross-sectional design using a random sample of 170 municipal employees from the City of Venda Nova do Imigrante, Espirito Santo state, Brazil, selected from a universe of 545 individuals. Data was collected using a 27-item questionnaire applied by a municipal worker. The comparison of dental pain and prevalence of absenteeism with socio-demographic and functional characteristics was verified using Fishers Exact test. The research project was approved by an Ethics Research Committee. The prevalence of dental pain among the employees was 43% and half of these felt dental pains at work. Absenteeism related to dental pain was 23.4%. Workers with lower instruction level were twice as likely to have dental pain (OR = 2,144, IC95% = 1,141; 4,030). Male subjects (OR = 5,714, IC95% = 1,773; 18,416), less years of education (OR = 4,875, IC95% = 1,405; 16,909) and less family income (OR = 3,613, IC95% = 0,931; 14,021) were related with higher absenteeism caused by dental pain. High dental pain frequency revealed in this study indicates that health promotion policies are needed to improve the quality of life of workers.

The scope of this paper was to evaluate the prevalence of the impact of oral health problems on quality of life, and its association with socio-demographic and clinical variables and the use of dental services by adults and the elderly in Marechal Floriano. A cross-sectional study was conducted on a random sample of 237 participants. Data was collected by Municipal Community Health Agents using four questionnaires with items about the socio-demographic and oral health status of the participants, dental practice structure and oral health impact profile (OHIP-14). The greatest impact perception related to oral health problems was found in individuals over 40 years of age (OR= 2.37 IC 95%=1.375;4.098), those with a perceived need for removable partial dentures (OR= 2.771 IC 95%=1.488;5.162), and full removable dentures (OR= 2.292 IC 95%=1.305;4.026). The impact prevalence was of 35% and revealed an association with age and the perceived need for partial and full dentures. Subjective indicators must be used in conjunction with objective indicators to determine the populations treatment needs, thereby improving oral health and quality of life of the population.

Pain is a public health problem responsible for loss of work days. The scope of this article is to analyze the prevalence of dental pain and absenteeism, and the possible association with social and demographic characteristics. This cross-sectional study involved a random sample of 169 individuals selected from a universe of 666 workers. Data was collected by a trained researcher using a structured questionnaire. Fishers Exact Test verified the possible associations; the strength of the associations was verified by the Odds Ratio with 5% significance. The prevalence of dental pain was 46.7%, and absenteeism 12.7%. There was no association between dental pain and the variables analyzed, namely sex, age, income and education. With respect to absenteeism, the individuals with less years of instruction declared greater loss of work hours (OR = 8.850, IC95% = 2.114; 37.046). The prevalence of pain was considerable and was not associated with the controlled variables of this study. Dental pain observed was sufficient to lead to absenteeism, and this was associated with education. Periodic exams must be encouraged for diagnosis and early intervention, thereby minimizing episodes of dental pain.

Purpose: evaluate association between social and demographic variables, breastfeeding interruption and deleterious oral habits and the prevalence of non-nutritive sucking habits in 03 to 05 years old school children in Vitoria, Espirito Santo.Method: this is a retrospective longitudinal study with a final random sample of 903 children from a universe of 9.829 students. The comparison between predictive variables and non-nutritive sucking habits used Fisher Exact test and strength of association verified by Odds Ratio. Results: 12,4% of the children present or had presented finger sucking habit and 37,7% of sucking pacifier. There was no statistically significant association between finger sucking with weaning. Female children had 20% more chance to have habit of sucking pacifier (p=0,000). Children that had early breast feeding interruption presented approximately 4 times more chance of developing the habit of sucking pacifiers (p= 0.000).Conclusions: the association of pacifier sucking habit and weaning was verified. Early weaning can be considered a risk factor for maintenance of pacifiers sucking habit.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of oral problems on the quality of life of women before and during chemotherapy for breast cancer. Material and Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted on women with breast cancer at a Hospital reference, Espirito Santo, Brazil from January 2012 to January 2013. Assessment was performed at three time-points, the first before the onset of therapeutic intervention, the second after the first chemotherapy session, and the third after the second chemotherapy session. The volunteers were assessed using interviews that included the application of the subjective indicator Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). The data were subjected to descriptive analysis based on tables of absolute and percentage frequencies relative to the OHIP-14 dimensions. McNemar’s test assessed the direction of discordance, and the Kappa test measured the levels of concordance among the three assessments. The significance level was established at 5%. Results: The percent frequency of the impact of oral problems on the quality of life increased from the first (27%) to the second (49%) time-point, and functional limitation (p=0.001), physical pain (p=0.039), and physical disability (p=0.039) were statistically significant. Conclusion: Oral problems exerted a substantial impact on the volunteers’ quality of life before the onset of chemotherapy, and quality of life became poorer after the onset of treatment. Patients with breast cancer require specific oral care and should be monitored before, during, and after anticancer treatment to minimize the deleterious effects of chemotherapy and improve their quality of life.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dental pain is a major reason for looking for dental services. Toothache may prevent or impair daily activities, such as working, having fun or socializing. This study aimed at evaluating dental pain prevalence in the last six months, among employees of the Teaching Hospital, Vitoria, ES. METHODS: This was an analytical, observational cross-sectional study. Data were collected by six trained interviewers by means of standardized interviews filling a questionnaire previously used by other studies about toothache among employees of the state of Espirito Santo, which included demographic and social information, as well as toothache report, type of pain (spontaneous or induced), use of dental services and employment bond. Confidence level of 95%, error of 5% and expected prevalence of 50% were used for sample calculation. Final sample was made up of 265 employees. The association between studied variables and dental pain prevalence was observed using Pearson Chi-square test with significance level of 5%. Odds Ratio and respective confidence intervals (CI- 95%) were estimated for statistically significant variables. RESULTS: Dental pain prevalence was 65.7%. Employees with up to 39 years of age (p=0.004, OR=2.081 CI 95%=1.226; 3.530), of economic classes C and D (p=0.007, OR=1.968 CI 95%=1.173; 3.30) and those receiving up to three minimum wages have reported higher dental pain prevalence (p=0.000, OR=2.829 CI=1.611; 4.967). CONCLUSION: There has been high dental pain prevalence among employees. Strategies to decrease such event should be implemented aiming at improving quality of life of such employees.

The scope of this article is to verify the prevalence of the impact produced by oral health conditions on the quality of life of civil servants and the possible association with social and demographic variables, utilization of dental services, dental pain and the need for prosthetics. A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess a random sample of 286 public employees. Data was collected using four questionnaires including the Oral Health Impact Profile. The association between the variables was measured using Fishers Exact Test; the Odds Ratio evaluated the strength of association between impact and exposure. Logistic regression models were adjusted for each dimension. Ninety-three individuals (32.5%) declared impacts. The main impact prediction was associated with age, social and economic status, education, the use of dental services, the need for prosthetics and dental pain. A considerable number of individuals declared an impact on quality of life due to oral conditions.
