This paper discusses supervised training as a fundamental opportunity for the consolidation of the teaching space and also as means of facing the challenges posed by the guidelines for dental courses. It is not a new proposal. It is in fact a fight for changes in dental practicing which began in the 70s with the movement for the integration between dental teaching and dental services. It approaches public health services spaces and the world of work as central for a new teaching strategy. That would generate the opportunity to graduate professionals with a more critical profile, also capable of understanding reality and intervening on it. The paper points the risks of understanding and misunderstanding - supervised training with practicing inside the dental school, under the label of curricular supervised training. In that perspective traditional practices, with emphasis on technical and biological aspects would not have the potential to achieve the changes proposed by the curricular guidelines. While highlighting the relevance of curricular supervised training in professional education, the paper sets a dialogue with ABENO, contesting some of its positions. In that sense, the paper shows the need for a deeper and more participative discussion, that joins as many dental schools as possible.

A cross-sectional study was conducted among dentists in the Unified National Health System (SUS) in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, to identify factors associated with their willingness to treat HIV/AIDS patients. Questionnaires were distributed at the participants workplace. Some 140 out of 345 selected dentists (41.0%) participated. Prevalence of willingness to treat was 55.0%. Results adjusted by multiple logistic regression showed that willingness to treat was significantly associated with a realistic perception of occupational risk (OR = 4.8; 95%CI: 1.32-18.04), knowledge of the exposure protocol (OR = 4.5; 95%CI: 1.61-13.07), positive attitudes towards dealing with the epidemic (OR = 3.2; 95%CI: 1.37-7.45), previous professional experience with HIV/AIDS patients (OR = 3.0; 95%CI: 1.30-7.19), and opposition to compulsory testing of patients for HIV (OR = 2.3; 95%CI: 0.96-5.40). Dentists with prior accidental exposure to potentially contaminated material showed less willingness to treat (OR = 0.4; 95%CI: 0.15-0.85). Fear of contamination was the main source of anxiety for health workers dealing with HIV/ AIDS patients.

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to present a new topical treatment protocol for oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL), consisting of a 25% podophyllin resin with a 1% penciclovir cream (PP), and to compare this topical treatment protocols efficacy with that of 2 other topical treatment protocols: a 25% podophyllin resin (P) and a 25% podophyllin resin with a 5% acyclovir cream (PA). STUDY DESIGN Forty-two human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients with 69 OHL lesions were randomly treated using P, PA, or PP (14 patients in each topical treatment protocol). Clinical healing was determined when the white plaque could no longer be seen in the primary location of the lesion. Topical treatment performance was evaluated by clinical healing within each week of topical treatment protocol as well as by the recurrence of the lesion. Statistical survival analysis was performed using a Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS Approximately 55% of the patients presented with clinical healing of OHL within 7-8 weeks of each topical treatment protocol. After the sixth week, the PA treatment protocol presented a faster clinical healing rate of OHL. Recurrence was observed in 3 and 7 OHL lesions treated with P and PP treatment protocols, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The PP treatment protocol proved to be effective; however, the PA treatment protocol was more effective in the clinical healing rate for OHL than P and PP after the sixth week of treatment, and no recurrent OHL was observed in the PA treatment group.

AIMS To evaluate the effects of complete denture (CD) quality and user satisfaction on the use of CDs provided by primary care services at 1 and 5 years postinsertion. MATERIALS AND METHODS A random sample of 233 individuals were evaluated regarding the use of maxillary and/or mandibular CDs at 1 and 5 years after insertion; at both time points, denture quality, integrity, and user satisfaction were measured. The covariates included age, gender, marital status, years of education, family income, past use of CD, time since maxillary teeth loss, mandibular ridge height, and frequency of return visits to the dentist after receiving the prostheses. The effect of the variables on the use of CDs throughout the period was estimated using logistic regression models with random effects in the intercept. RESULTS Overall, 64.9% and 64.1% of the participants were using their CD at 1 and 5 years, respectively. Of those who used the pair of prostheses at 5 years, 86.3% reported using them in the first evaluation. Use of CDs at 1 year was greater among users with some degree of education, higher satisfaction, and those whose CD had adequate stability and free functional space. Use of CDs at 5 years was greater in satisfied users and those with a stable CD. CONCLUSION Denture quality and user satisfaction were associated with the use of CDs after 1 and 5 years. CD use was greater in individuals who had used it for 1 year, indicating greater abandonment in the first year than in other periods.

The scope of this study was to assess the way Child Health Records (CHRs) are filled out and the association between the quality of entries and type of service used to monitor the health of children. It involved a cross-sectional study with a stratified sample - proportional for the nine Health Districts of Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais - of 3- to 5-year-old children selected on Child Vaccination Campaign Day in 2014. Interviews with parents including observation of the 21 CHR items were conducted. The dependent variable was defined by the quality of the CHR entry (satisfactory/unsatisfactory), where satisfactory entries were > 60%. The independent variables were the type of service for monitoring child health, demographic and health conditions of the mother and child and healthcare treatment received by the child, with the participation of 367 (96.10%) parents. The prevalence of unsatisfactory entries was 55.5%. No significant association was found between quality of entry and type of healthcare. Unsatisfactory entries were associated with gestational age < 37 weeks, lack of access to information about the CHR and the absence of parental entries on the CHR. The CHR has been unsatisfactorily employed as a tool for monitoring health, irrespective of the type of service used by the child.
