Neilton Araújo de Oliveira; Rosane Moreira Silva de Meirelles; Geraldo Cunha Cury; Luiz Anastacio Alves

Medical Education is undergoing modifications in the doctrine and in the practice of professional education as a consequence of todays globalized world. With respect to the Brazilian Health System, different subjects show increasing interest in medical education and in changes in the healthcare services. There are initiatives for encouraging changes in the medical curriculum for improving medical education. The Program for the Encouragement of Curricular Changes in Medical Courses (Promed) was implemented in this context. In order to analyze the opinion of students about changes in the curriculum of the medical course, we studied six medical schools in three Brazilian states, using questionnaires and interviews. Some of the propositions of the National Curriculum Guidelines have not been met but Promed gave rise to a new extensive program of changes in the medical curriculum. Even having exploratory character, this work clearly indicates the need for prospective studies in order to know the impact of Promed on medical education for adapting it to the healthcare needs of the population.

Students from a Rural Boarding house of UFMG School of Medicine performed a survey of prevalence of schistosomiasis mansoni and other intestinal parasites in 20 rural schools in Jaboticatubas, MG. An evaluation of house and sanitation conditions was made and stool parasitological examinations were realised in all school children. It was noticed that 15.43% of the children presented S. mansonis ova in stool - that was the most prevalent parasite. From the examinations we verify 13.76% positive cases for G. lamblia; 12.89% for S. stercoralis; 11.13% for A. lumbricoides; 9.96% for hookworms; 9.57% for E. histolytica. The other parasites appeared with lower prevalence. All the children that presented parasites ova in stool received treatment. The result that was found shows that schistosomiasis mansoni is a very serious problem of public health and basic sanitation actions are necessary to the endemic control.

A clinical-epidemiologic study of schistosomiasis mansoni was conducted in the population of Ponte do Pasmado, a village in the municipality of Itinga, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Faecal parasitology by the Kato-Katz method and clinical examination were performed in 93.8% and 82.8% of the local population, respectively. A socioeconomic survey was also made and the signs and symptoms presented by the patients were recorded, as well as their contacts with natural waters. The rate of Schistosoma mansoni infection was 50.3%; the peak of infection occurred during the second decade of life; there was a predominance of low egg counts in faeces (85.89% of positive patients eliminated less than 500 eggs per gram of faeces); the splenomegaly rate was 1.23%. When the risk factors for S. mansoni infection were studied, significant risks were detected in activities such as fetching water, washing dishes, bathing, and crossing streams.

This paper aims to reflect on the National Reorientation Program of Professional Education in Health (Pro-Health) and the Education by Work for Health Program (PET-Health). This is a descriptive study using qualitative tools of document analysis. From the acquired documents and data, we developed the following analytical axes: (1) historical roots: exploring origins; (2) Pro-Health and PET-Health: knowledge trajectories; (3) integrating teaching and service: structuring key ideas; and (4) from the desire to change to the actual practice of interprofessional integration and learning: discussing powers and limits. We concluded that the Pro-Health and PET-Health Programs have significant power to act as health reorientation policies that indicate progress regarding the integration of teaching/service and interprofessional education.

Paulo Henrique Vilela Oliveira de Sá; Geraldo Cunha Cury; Liliane da Consolação Campos Ribeiro

The study aimed to identify and describe health promotion actions related to physical activity among elderly people at basic health units and the perception of those responsible for this practice. This was a cross-sectional survey using a quantitative approach carried out in Diamantina, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in 20112. A 28-questions survey, organized in the form of a Likert scale, was used during the interviews carried out among 28 people in charge of such actions. Eleven educational health promotion actions related to physical activity among elderly people were found, five of which under the responsibility of teachers and students of a public school, while six under headed by professionals from the family health teams. The actions observed were ‘walk and exercise group (stretching),’ ‘back group,’ and ‘Qigong.’ Participants demonstrated their understanding of the benefits afforded by phy-sical activity for the elderly, the impact these actions have on public health, and the need for ongoing training.
