Junior Code Academy: A pilot project

The Junior Code Academy is a pilot project that aims to generalize the teaching of programming and code in schools in Portugal, promoting digital literacy and developing skills of problem solving. The presented qualitative pilot study involves students from the 1st cycle of basic education in three schools of Lisbon Municipality, comprising partnership with Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and University of Aveiro. The main preliminary results emphasized that there is a high motivation and commitment of students towards programming, which potentially prevents early school dropout.

This work aims at explaining one online platform (ArguQuest) whose main objective is to stimulate learning through argumentation and questioning in a collaborative virtual environment. It is expected that students clarify their knowledge by explaining what they know to their peers. They have to make themselves precise and clear so that their peers can understand them and the ideas they want to express.

To face these challenges, state policies and guidelines of multilateral financiers, (UNESCO, World Bank, OECD, among others) adopted strategies for the development of the information society, a political-ideological term proposed by UNESCO in 2003, which grew up with the process of neo-liberal globalization, with the objective of accelerating the opening and self-regulation of the knowledge society.

ICEM & SIIE 2011 Joint Conference “Old meets new - media in education” – A review

The ICEM & SIIE 2011 conference was held at the Department of Education of the University of Aveiro and was organized by the University of Aveiro (Portugal) – a member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities. In addition to international experts in the field of ICT in education, the event brought together 164 participants who represented some 30 different countries. The final evaluation by the organization committee and the external evaluation team determined that the conference was highly successful both academically and professionally. The preconference sessions during the preceding Media Day, were especially successful, with nearly as many participants as the conference itself. ICEM & SIIE 2011 aimed at gathering researchers, teachers and other professionals, at national and international levels, around a focal topic that was designed to trigger and center the discussion on the old/new duality of media in education.
