'Moças e senhoras dentistas': formação, titulação e mercado de trabalho nas primeiras décadas da República

Maria Lucia Mott; Olga Sofia Fabergé Alves; Maria Aparecida Muniz; Luiz Vicente Souza Martino; Ana Paula Ferreira Santos; Karla Maestrini

Since the 1980s, more women than men have graduated from Brazils dentistry schools, yet little has been written about womens access to the profession. This article provides background information useful in analyzing the training and professional roles of women dentists in Brazil during the first years of the Republic; discusses the relation between changes in the profession, health policies, and the gender system during that period; and contributes to the discussion on the feminization of the profession. The article is part of a broader project investigating training, professional roles, and the labor market in the health field in São Paulo. Sources include articles published in newspapers, magazines, and specialized journals devoted to dentistry, pharmacy, and medicine, along with government and university records covering the years 1892 through 1926.

Gênero, medicina e filantropia: Maria Rennotte e as mulheres na construção da nação

Maria Lucia Mott

The article analyses the trajectory of Maria Rennotte, a Belgian who in 1878 moved to Brazil working as a governess, and afterwards as a teacher and doctor. With her writings and social practice, Maria Rennotte fought for womens rights in search for better education, access to different types of work, a healthier body and political citizenship. She asserted womens participation in assistance entities, founding a Red Cross branch in Sao Paulo. Her trajectory enables us to state that although women were not politically considered in terms of their civil rights, had limited educational opportunities and few chances of wage-earning jobs, basically being identified as mothers and wives, they found in philanthropic associations a breach to enlarge their participation in the public sphere. Acting in national life, women changed the services offered to the people, the law, the educational and health institutions and the development of scientific knowledge.

Maria Lucia Mott

The objectives of this study are: 1. To review the proposals of philanthropic entities, organized and managed by women in the first half of the 20th century; 2. To rethink the role they played elaborating programs and establishing public policies; 3. To call attention to the need of reviewing the Brazilian feminist movement. The guide for these topics will be based on the analysis of the maternalist discourse. The research was based on documents from the archives of the Cruzada Pro Infância (Crusade Pro-Childhood) an entity founded in the city of Sao Paulo in 1930. It will focus on the proposals for maternity protection elaborated by Perola Byington, its managing director between 1930-1945.The objectives of this study are: 1.
