Verbal Phraseology: An Analysis of Cognitive Verbs in Linguistics, Engineering and Medicine Academic Papers

María Luisa Carrió-Pastor

The main aim of this paper is to study if the phraseology of cognitive verbs used in academic English reveals different discourse patterns in the specific fields of Linguistics, Engineering and Medicine. The objectives of this study are first the identification of cognitive verb patterns in academic English, second the contrastive analysis of the cognitive verbs patterns used in Linguistics, Engineering and Medicine and finally, the study of the patterns used in the different disciplines of academic English. In this analysis, the taxonomy proposed by Marin-Arrese (2015) to identify evidential expressions, i.e. verbs of mental state or cognitive attitude, is used to identify the cognitive verbs in the corpus. The verbs identified in this category were searched with WordSmith Tools 5.0 and the phraseological units including cognitive verbs were compiled and studied. The frequencies of the verbs with the concordances of the cognitive verbs were analysed and examples discussed. The results extracted from the three different specific fields of knowledge were discussed and the conclusions were drawn.

Second Language Teaching and Technology. An Overview

Hanna Skorczynska; Milagros del Saz Rubio; María Luisa Carrió-Pastor

This chapter, which is focused on second language approaches and the use of technology in language teaching, is divided in three sections. The first one is devoted to the latest approaches proposed in second language teaching by researchers and its main aim is to give a general overview of the methods proposed recently. The second section centres its attention in the teaching of the four skills that are learnt by second language learners with the intention of describing the implications of teaching language skills. And finally, the third section focuses on the role of technology in second language teaching, the most outstanding advances in this field and also gives some examples of the way technology has been implemented in higher education in second language teaching.

Concluding Remarks: Insights and Implications for Technology Implementation in Higher Education for Second Language Teaching and Translation Studies

María Luisa Carrió-Pastor

The research and outcomes presented in this volume show a wide ranging set of studies, each exploring different aspects of the implementation of technology in higher education. The book has first established the basic issues associated with technology use in higher education and then it has been divided into thematic sections, reflecting the interests of second language teachers and translation studies. The book sheds new light on the use of technology in teaching a second language and on studies on translation training.

Technology Implementation in Second Language Teaching and Translation Studies

María Luisa Carrió-Pastor

Technology Implementation in Second Language Teaching and Translation Studies, New Tools, New Approaches is about innovation and creativity in higher education pedagogy and translation studies. This volume also discusses how universities, through the lens of practitioners, are one of the best places for the analysis of knowledge acquisition in the majority of educational areas. This book considers two standpoints to be of pivotal importance in higher education research: language teaching and translation studies. In a similar vein, a great number of research studies discussed in this book has focused on the output that the learners produce, rather than the teaching methodologies and techniques that actually lead to appropriate input for instance by encouraging language learners to interact, to discover, and to solve learning problems. This book paid particular attention to second language acquisition techniques, focusing more on input than on the output of language teaching.
