Cristiano Roque Antunes Barreira; Marina Massimi

By the analysis of a specific type of Jesuitical correspondence - the Litterae Indipetae -, a dynamism of the experiences elaboration was outstanding, revealing a modus vivendi (way of living) based on Aristotelic-Thomist philosophical psychology, name under which this praxis has been usually referred to. This article is dedicated to this lived experience described in the letters and to this specific modus vivendi (with its due basic implications), searching to answer this question: in which measure does the category of knowledge of himself expressed, starting from proper common place as specific type of letters and of the way of thinking of the Jesuits (in a particular historical-cultural-institutional scope) can be of interest to modern psychology? It results from this inquiry that the elaboration of the experience of knowledge of himself, in this scope, starts from the assumption that man is an unit (body and soul, reason and faith, sensation and intellection) and that, living in an orderly way (in itself and in the world that surrounds it), fulfills its being by analogy to the Holy Being.

Arthur Ramos and the Use of Adlerian Psychotherapy in Child Guidance Clinics in Brazil, 1933–1939

Daniela Leal; Marina Massimi

The first studies on psychology and the introduction of psychotherapy techniques in Brazil occurred between the end of the 19th and the early 20th century. Among those who introduced these ideas and techniques was an expert in social psychology: the Brazilian psychiatrist, social psychologist, and anthropologist Arthur Ramos (1903–1949). Ramos was also a pioneer, focusing on the application of some Adlerian concepts and psychotherapeutic techniques in child guidance clinics set up in schools of Rio de Janeiro. This article attempts to understand, through historical research, how Ramos appropriated the concepts and practices of the psychology proposed by Alfred Adler and incorporated them into his own psychotherapeutic practice in Brazilian child guidance clinics from 1933 to 1939.

Conceptions of Education and Its Influence on the Brazilian Educational System: Some Examples Derived from the Socio-Cultural History

Marina Massimi

In the face of a contemporary crisis in education, a historical and critical reinterpretation of the Brazilian sociocultural world is appropriate, specifically for the concepts of education that prevailed in this area. Taking into account the multiethnic and multicultural diversity of the country, we need to recognize the existence of a multiplicity of conceptions regarding education, which were present in several forms throughout history, using various expressive methods and instruments. In this chapter, we focus on a few approaches that deserve special mention for having played a decisive role in the course of Brazilian history and in the Brazilian educational system: the concept of education in oral, indigenous, African, and Lusitanian cultures whose past we know indirectly by reports from missionaries and travelers; the concept of education proper to the Jesuit missionaries who endeavored in the challenge of providing educational experiences in all locations of their operations in Brazilian territory; and the modern conception of education of the twentieth century, especially the groups that in Brazil became spokespeople and project handlers of American progressive education. Other immigrant groups belonging to diverse ethnicities, over the centuries, brought to Brazil their traditions (coming from Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, North America) and made the educational process an important ambit for the preservation and transmission of traditions to new generations. A constant tension in Brazilian history between educational experiences created by social subjects and institutional policies is evinced. Education can become a process centered on the child as an individual and not as an object of educational policymaking, if society gives attention to the educational experiences (and conceptions derived from them) that are inherent in Brazilian culture.

This paper aims to investigate aspects of the temporality conception of Augustine of Hippo in the works of authors in the colonial Brazilian culture. The study, conducted from the perspective of history of psychological knowledge, proposes a review, in the light of the Augustinian theme, concerning the temporality of the authors of the texts chosen for analysis: Antonio Vieira, Alexandre de Gusmao and Nuno Marques Pereira. In these, the analysis shows the presence of four dimensions of Augustinian temporality: the difference between time and eternity; psychological time; moral time and historical time. It also shows the relationship between the notion of temporality and personal dynamism. Therefore, it showed aspects of Augustine’s thought in the conception of the temporality of these authors.

Contribuições de Edith Stein para a Fundamentação Filosófica da Psicologia Científica

Carolina de Resende Damas Cardoso; Marina Massimi

The article intends to present Edith Stein’s contributions to the philosophical foundation of Psychology as a rigorous science of the subjectivity. Some relevant moments that situate the cradle of scientific Psychology as well as the emerging of Phenomenology are detached. Both disciplines arose from philosophical matters, and one of them refers to the concept of psychologism and the consequent naturalization of psychology. The phenomenological conception emerged in declared opposition to those movements. The figure of phenomenologist Edith Stein stands out due to her analyses of the object and the epistemological framing of Psychology. Based on the analysis of the essential structures of the human person, Stein offers a new conception of subjectivity, as well as analyses the scientific methodologies that could better apprehend such object.

Psychology in Brazil was legally recognized in 1962. However, before this year, many professionals have worked in this area. Carolina Martuscelli Bori has been considered one of those professionals and among the contributions she made, her efforts to ameliorate the professional training is one of the most cited. This article investigates Bori’s contribution published until 1962. The search was made in the journals Ciencia e Cultura, Boletim de Psicologia and Jornal Brasileiro de Psicologia and in her curriculum Lattes, in search for the library of the University of Sao Paulo and references of Carolina Bori’s articles. Altogether, 19 articles were located, eight of which were published until 1962. The analysis allows us to state that the work of Carolina Bori presents discussions that may assist the design and targeting of various current ethical and academical issues, as experimental research in undergraduation courses, scientific methodology, scientific development and knowledge production.

Abstract: By the analysis of a specific type of Jesuitical correspondence – the Litterae Indipetae – a dynamic of working-out of experience was identified, revealing a modus vivendi (way of living) based upon a Christian view of the human being, proper to the members of the Society of Jesus. This article explores the lived experience described in those letters (with its basic implications) and the description of the philosophical concept of “freedom” contained in the Conimbricenses Commentaries on the Nichomachean Ethics. We try to answer in which measure the category of “freedom” expressed in the topoi specific to this kind of letters and to the Jesuitical forma mentis (in a particular historical-cultural-institutional context) may be of interest for understanding the psychical dynamic of human beings. It results from this inquiry that the elaboration of the experience of “freedom” in this context, starts from the assumption that human beings are an unit (body and soul, reason and faith, sensation and intellection) and that, living in an orderly way (in themselves and in the surrounding world), they fulfill their aim in life conforming themselves to the Divine Being.
