For achieving business success and sustainability, companies should increase their focus on aligning business strategy with information technology (IT) governance. Consequently, there has been an increase of interest in IT governance adoption and the usage of COBIT framework. In order to investigate the reasons, ways and differences of COBIT framework implementation in financial sector companies, we have conducted a longitudinal research in form of case studies within two banks and two insurance companies. The results reveal an increase in COBIT maturity levels for all observed companies during the five year period, but with significant differences in the level and speed of its adoption. This research indicate the importance of true strategic IT and business alignment for increasing IT governance maturity and opportunities for business model innovation, which makes the practical contribution of the paper.

The main objective of this paper is to stress the importance of developing an e-strategy for an e-business project implementation success. As the notion ‘e-business is business’ gains wider acceptance, it is important that a potential e-business focuses on developing a comprehensive e-strategy to enable the business to meet its future expectation. As spoken for an information system strategy, e-strategy must be aligned with overall business strategy as well. The adjustment of these strategies usually results in the introduction of new business models that should enable the company to takeover new markets and customers, to increase the level of productivity and the profit margin. Also, in this paper the results of research about some key issues in developing an e-strategy are presented. The research is conducted on the sample of ‘400 Largest Croatian companies’ according to their annual revenue.
