Departing from the ethnography of use/appropriation episodes of Martim Moniz Plaza, this paper discuss about the importance of the ethnographical practice in the apprehension and understanding of the everyday circumstances. Some social/cultural aspects are discussed which contributed to the invention of a geography of resistance in this specific area of the city and also to the inscription of this plaza in the social and urban map of Lisbon. Four motives have oriented this reasoning: 1) the geographic situation of that Plaza (at Lisbons centre); 2) its building configuration as a result of a set of controversial social and urban policies; 3) the representativeness of this specific plaza - namely, of two shopping malls that arise, at the Plaza, as symbolic meeting points - in an attempt to construct a multi-ethnic and a multi-cultural image of the city; 4) the role of this Plaza regarding the definition of a set of political manifestations.

The chapter discusses how ICT can be used to enhance the understanding of the relationship between space, users and social practices. As an example of possible use of ICT for capturing and better understanding user’s needs, the new digital tool WAY Cyberparks is presented and discussed. A “cyberpark” is defined as a new type of urban landscape where nature and ICTs blend together to generate hybrid experiences and enhance quality of life. The WAY Cyberparks digital tool consists of a smart phone application, server/cloud and web services. Through the experiences from testing it in selected urban open spaces in Barcelona, Lisbon and Ljubljana opportunities are presented and lessons are drawn about relevant aspects of the ICT towards building a more participatory and collaborative process in planning of public spaces. A relevant aspect of the ICT lays in their ability to enhance communication with (potential) users, transforming the production of public open spaces into an interactive process, and enabling creative community participation and empowerment. Furthermore, some challenges of the increasing penetration of digital technologies devices (smart phones, smart watches, tablets, etc.) within the broader context of their use in public urban open spaces such as parks, gardens, squares, plazas are discussed, together with the consequences of this interweaving, which is growing at a rapid pace, unfolds research needs in the future.

The aim is to discuss the relationship between traditional and scientific technological knowledge as innovative and fundamental to heritage conservation. It is argued that this innovation does not necessarily come from scientific knowledge, but potentially from a wise articulation between these two types of knowledge. This discussion starts from an already long process of reflection on lime heritage conservation, as developed in LNEC from research projects.

The LaboratA³rio Nacional de Engenharia Civil and the Municipality of Beja started a technical and scientific collaboration in order to contribute to inventorying and safeguarding the lime ovens – and associated activities – as intangible heritage. The aim of this cooperation and the progress already achieved are presented in broad lines. Considering Cultural Heritage conservation policies, the interest of a work perspective in the interface between material and immaterial is highlighted.
