Resumen The expectation that involves the birth of a child is linked to the idea of taking home a healthy baby. However, what was dreamt throughout the entire pregnancy is not always possible. This is a study of qualitative-descriptive character, with the purpose of getting to know the parents who had their babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) from the moment of birth. It took part in the study 6 mothers who had their children admitted in a university hospital. The subjects were interviewed through a semi-structured instrument. Data was analyzed according to Bardin’s referential, originating the main theme: the parents’ experience in the process of having a child in a NICU, and three sub-themes: living with feelings of separation and abandonment; experiencing the fear of loss; identifying difficulties and finding sources of support. The study evidenced the importance of involving the family in the assistance process, as a precursory factor of the quality of the humanized attention.

Exploratory and descriptive study, of qualitative nature, developed with the purpose of knowing the route of the childs family admitted to the hospital. The data were collected at the pediatric unit of the Regional University Hospital of Maringá (HUM), through semi-structured interviews with the accompanying family members. After analysis of content, two categories emerged: the role of the family in the identification of deviations in the childs health, and the (un)readiness of the health services: impacts on the child health attendance. The study evidenced an expectation of the family in face of the childs illness, searching for alternative strategies and late seeking for health services. These, in turn, show gaps along the attendance process, from diagnosis to treatment, thus raising familiar stress and increasing the possibilities of aggravation of the clinical condition of the child.

This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research performed at a teaching hospital between August and September 2011. Data was collected through a questionnaire applied to the nursing team of a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The study objective was to identify the feelings experienced by the nursing team in the face of death of a pediatric patient. Data analysis (Minayo, 2010) identified three categories: “ feelings of the nursing team towards death”; “possibilities and limits of dealing with the loss of those who remain”; “experiencing the dying process in the work environment”. The results revealed that facing death requires a cautious approach that considers the needs of individuals involved: children, family and nursing team. This issue is still little explored and discussed in healthcare sciences programmes and that specific support services in all institutions could contribute to a more qualified attention in these contexts.

Objective To describe the maternal care process mediated by nurses during the period of hospitalisation and discharge of premature babies. Method This is a descriptive, exploratory, and qualitative study, using the methodological framework of convergent care research, with seven mothers of premature babies admitted to a hospital in southern Brazil, from October to December 2011. Data from the mothers daily journals were submitted to content analysis. Results Analysis resulted in three categories portraying the path and the adaptation process of the mothers to the care of their premature babies, from preparation for discharge to overcoming her fears and insecurities concerning home care. Conclusion It is important for mothers in this initial and critical stage of hospitalisation of preterm infants to receive assistance, especially in terms of receptiveness and ongoing care, as a strategy to promote maternal autonomy and home adaptation.
