Kayna Trombini Schmidt; Anelize Helena Sassá; Marly Veronez; Ieda Harumi Higarashi; Sonia Silva Marcon

The objective was to identify factors associated with the practice of breastfeeding (BF), weight gain and nutritional status of preterm infants during the first six months of life and verify the relationship between these variables and maternal and neonatal characteristics. Analytical studies, cohort, performed with 42 preterm infants born between May and October 2008. The prevalence of BF was 40.5% at six months and mean weight gain ranged between 18 and 40 g/day. The practice of BF was associated with lower weight and lower gestational age at birth. Weight gain was positively correlated with gestational age and birth weight, maternal age and the practice of breastfeeding at 15 days after discharge. Being premature has not stopped the practice of BF; however, weight gain was higher among those born with better growth and maturation in utero.

Bebê de risco: acompanhando o crescimento infantil no primeiro ano de vida

Anelize Helena Sassá; Ieda Harumi Higarashi; Luciana Olga Bercini; Débora Cristina de Arruda; Sonia Silva Marcon

Objective: To monitor the growth of high-risk babies in the first year of life. Methods: Analytical, cohort study, conducted with 237 babies born in Maringa - PR, between May 1 to October 31, 2008, under the Program for the Surveillance of At-Risk Infants. Results: Growth changes were present in 188 (79.3%) infants and occurred mainly after the first trimester of life. A slower than expected growth rate showed statistical association with maternal age of less than 18 years, education of less than 8 years, presence of congenital anomalies, and birth weight greater than or equal to 2,500g born at term. Conclusion: The evaluation of growth in at-risk infants should include a multidimensional analysis, considering the biological and maturational aspects of each specific risk condition, and adaptation of the baby and his/her family on this evolutionary path.

Anelize Helena Sassá; Maria Aparecida Munhoz Gaíva; Ieda Harumi Higarashi; Sonia Silva Marcon

Objective To describe nursing actions implemented in a home context for the needs presented by the families of extremely low birth weight newborns. Methods This convergent care research was carried out with nine families who were visited in their home. For data collection we used semi-structured informal interviews and observation of participants during the first six months after hospital discharge. Data were analyzed using the thematic modality. Results Care needs of families during daily home care were related mainly to doubts and insecurities specific to extremely low birth weight premature babies and the care and guidance required for follow-up of newborns in general. Conclusion Nursing actions in a home context involve child evaluation, guidance, demonstrations, clarifications, referrals, and stimulation for puericulture follow-up with specialists. These actions also include facilitating family empowerment and gradual autonomy of care.
