Familias inmigrantes y escuela : desencuentros, estrategias y capital social

IntroductionOver the past two decades, the study of chronic cocaine and crack cocaine exposure in the pediatric population has been focused on the potential adverse effects, especially in the prenatal period and early childhood. Non-invasive biological matrices have become an essential tool for the assessment of a long-term history of drug of abuse exposure.Case reportWe analyze the significance of different biomarker values in hair after chronic crack exposure in a two-year-old Caucasian girl and her parents, who are self-reported crack smokers. The level of benzoylecgonine, the principal metabolite of cocaine, was determined in segmented hair samples (0 cm to 3 cm from the scalp, and > 3 cm from the scalp) following washing to exclude external contamination. Benzoylecgonine was detectable in high concentrations in the childs hair, at 1.9 ng/mg and 7.04 ng/mg, respectively. Benzoylecgonine was also present in the maternal and paternal hair samples at 7.88 ng/mg and 6.39 ng/mg, and 13.06 ng/mg and 12.97 ng/mg, respectively.ConclusionBased on the data from this case and from previously published poisoning cases, as well as on the experience of our research group, we conclude that, using similar matrices for the study of chronic drug exposure, children present with a higher cocaine concentration in hair and they experience more serious deleterious acute effects, probably due to a different and slower cocaine metabolism. Consequently, children must be not exposed to secondhand crack smoke under any circumstance.

Factors that influence friendship choices in children under 3 in two schools: An approach towards child culture in formal settings in Barcelona

Marta Bertran

The number of schools for children aged between 4 and 36 months has increased greatly in Spain over the last 20 years, and with that children’s experiences have also changed. The aim of this research is to examine child culture and the factors influencing the relationships that children establish with peers in formal spaces with specific characteristics. According to the results, seniority and playing style influence friendship preferences, along with organisational factors such as the type and number of toys and age structure. This ethnographic research was conducted in the city of Barcelona.

Being a mother and father in international adoption in Spain: Towards the child’s wellbeing

Marta Bertran

This article analyses the subjective experiences of adoptive parenthood among Spanish parents with regard to becoming and feeling like a father and mother. The article is based on analysis of data from group discussions held with pre- and post-adoptive parents in Catalonia, Spain, as part of a wider study of family, education and belonging on national and international adoption in Spain. Adoptive families start with parental knowledge and practices that were not created for the unique features of their families. Some adoptive parents who express difficulties in exercising their parenthood question the relevance of parental practices, the construction of parental bonds and the socially accepted concept of ‘child’.
