Methods for the description of discourse particles: contrastive analysis

Abstract In this paper, it will be investigated in what ways contrastive analysis might be helpful as a method for the analysis of discourse particles. The domain imposes some restrictions on the employment of contrastive analysis. However, a method will be proposed which guarantees comparability, and the results will be evaluated against other methods for the description of discourse particles.

Fur die speziellen Bedurfhisse unseres Beitrages und der Analysen, die in ihm vorgestellt werden sollen, wollen wir lediglich einige Aspekte akzentuieren, die fur uns von besonderer Bedeutung sein werden.

La Dimension Pragmatico-discursive du Français en Contact : L'Exemple des Consultations à la Radio Camerounaise

The aim of this paper is two-fold : First it argues for a stronger consideration of the pragmatic and discourse level in research on language contact. Secondly it contributes to the pragmatics of a specific regional variety of French, namely Cameroonian French. Starting with a picture of the complex linguistic landscape of this multilingual African country, the paper stresses the importance of the pragmatic and discourse level by raising some of the crucial theoretical and methodological issues that a broader, usage-based view on language contact has to cope with. First it suggests that pragmatic and discourse conventions may be influenced by the local contact languages and secondly it emphasizes that they may not be specific to a language, but be shared by a much larger and encompassing community of discourse. A case study of Cameroonian radio phone-ins where callers seek advice on medical issues points out some of these conventions. Here the participants establish a specific participation framework that avoids direct interaction between caller and expert while the host is set in as a mediator. This global mitigation technique then allows for quite direct realisations of the advice at a local level.

Nationale Selbst- und Fremdbilder sind im Gesprach: Sie kommen in den verschiedensten Gesprachszusammenhangen vor und sind oft auch ausdrucklich Gesprachsoder Diskussionsgegenstand. Es gibt die verschiedensten Anlasse, um sie ins Gesprach zu bringen, d.h. sich selbst als Mitglied einer bestimmten nationalen Gruppe zu prasentieren, Gesprachspartner als Mitglieder solcher Gruppen anzusprechen oder Dritte unter dieser Perspektive zu betrachten bzw. zu beschreiben. Wird eine nationale Gruppe zum Gesprachsthema gemacht, so last sich die konversationelle Konstitution von Selbst- und Fremdbildern in konzentrierter Form beobachten.

Subjektivität im Gespräch

The authors start in discussing Benveniste’s theory on subjectivity in language and come to the conclusion that language itself is essentially subjective and that, on the other hand the subject constitutes itself lingustically in dialogue. Two main devices in the conversational constitution of identity are the techniques of categorization (as far as social categories are implied) and of characterization. These techniques are described and illustrated on the basis of a French radio corpus.
