The desensitizing effect of calcium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide on hypersensitive dentin

Abstract One hundred ten patients with 220 sensitive teeth were divided into three groups. One hundred eighteen teeth were treated with a calcium hydroxide paste, and fifty-seven were treated with a magnesium hydroxide paste. Forty-five sensitive teeth were subjected to a sham control (distilled water). The best results were obtained with the calcium hydroxide group, where less than 2 per cent reported no relief after 6 months (p ≤ 0.001). However, the control groups reported more than 40 per cent complete relief during the same time period.
