Nor Adzhamizan Abd Rahman; Farok Azmat; Mat Ikram Yusof

One of the solutions to overcome the network congestion issue over the WAN is to deploy QoS. However Service Provider rarely utilized the QoS function to avoid any implication on the network because it requires high maintenance and attention from network administrator. Usually they would propose customers to add more bandwidth due to congestion but it would only resolve the congestion issue temporarily and application performance would still be an issue. This paper presents the performance evaluation on hybrid optimisation which combines both network-based QoS and WAN Optimisation solution to overcome the congested link issue over the WAN. The headquarters and branch office connection were setup over the MPLS VPN on our test lab to simulate the congested link. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated by measuring the network and application throughput, round-trip time, efficiency and utilisation. The results presents that the proposed hybrid optimisation was able to reduce bandwidth utilisation at 53% over the congested link. The proposed method was useful to managed network service provider to customize their managed service as well as improving the network efficiency and provide optimum level quality of service to enhance their end user experience.

Murizah Kassim; Mahamod Ismail; Kasmiran Jumari; Mat Ikram Yusof

This paper presented a bandwidth gain analysis on HTTP and HTTPs traffic in an IP Based network. A framework model to run the analysis has been setup which caters about 40 thousand concurrent users to the internet that included wired and wireless access users in a university. All traffic flow to one access Virtual Local area Network (VLAN) is configured. Five bandwidth collectors (BC) are setup in the running framework. Network traffic then is filtered according to the identified policies that are based on type of applications, protocols and rules. Two main policies rules are configured called the static object and customized object rules. Three main filtered content are also configured which are Integrated uniform resource locator (URL) and content filtering, instant message and point to point applications and the third filtered objects is web category. The objective of the traffic analysis is to observe the bandwidth gain in the network and manage the bandwidth used according to the prioritized applications needed. One hour and one day of internet traffic are collected to analyze the bandwidth used. Bandwidth gain then is presented for the five setup bandwidth collector. Results shows that the model framework helps to reduced the bandwidth utilization mainly on http and https traffic. An analysis on bandwidth gain and byte saved are presented in multiple times and percentage.

Femtocells are fully customized deployed base stations. They are being deployed in the macrocell cellular network in order to improve the indoor coverage and provide better user experience. Nevertheless, the randomly deployed femtocell poses a number of challenges, among the most critical is the interference as the achievable data rates and capacity depends mainly on the interference mitigation by the femtocell network. In this study, a self organizing solution combined with power control mechanism is proposed as the interference mitigation scheme for Long Term Evolution (LTE) femtocell network. The notion is based on adjusting the femtocell’s transmission power and based on interference power received at femtocell downlink, in order to reduce the interference between femtocells. The power adjustment is controlled and based on some basic factors such as number of femtocells and distance between the femtocells and subscribers. The performance evaluation of real time services is conducted in terms of Packet...

Noraini Zolkaffli; Muhamad Ibrahim; Mat Ikram Yusof; Ruhani Ab Rahman

Long Term Evolution (LTE) is becoming the first choice of operators when constructing the new network infrastructure. This is due to its high throughput and low latency. Although the LTE can offer high-speed data service as a benefit of wideband application, the large bandwidth also results in huge control signaling cost. In this paper simulation has been used as an option to evaluate the performance of available scheduling strategy. Performance for various scheduling strategies was evaluated and optimum scheduling strategy was proposed. Simulation in different environment and scenarios were implemented for specific size of users. In addition, varying the bandwidth size was included to observe the performance.

Murizah Kassim; Siti Fatimah Ramle; Ruhani Ab Rahman; Mat Ikram Yusof

This paper presents an analysis of Skype application network traffic on Home UniFi network. Recently, Skype is identified as one of the most online video media applications used in todays network communication. Before, people communicate through Skype using telephone line where it is very costly. Today, UniFi broadband network give better bandwidth for Skype users and more cheaper solution. However, it is important to determine whether the bandwidth offered by UniFi is fully utilized by the users as they consistently pay for it. The objectives of this research is to analyze multimedia Skype traffic characteristics such as usage of bandwidth, round trip time (RTT), and packet loss, Skype protocol, and Skype traffic model. The method involved establishing both video and voice calls at different time using Skype of home UniFi where one of the users runs the Wireshark to capture the traffic. Data are collected in schedule time and analyzed using MATLAB software. Collected data are analyzed on total of bandwidth usage and type of protocol used. Comparison is being made between different protocols used in time. Then, Skype traffic model is identified by fitted the raw data. Two-parameter Cumulative Distributions Functions (CDF) is generated. Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) technique is used to get the best traffic model which presents the highest MLE value. Result presents that Skype is using UDP protocol more than TCP protocol and the bandwidth usage is underutilized where only 10% of bandwidth is used from the offered committed access rate paid on the access bandwidth line. This study is significant in developing a dynamic committed access rate algorithms line which would benefits the broadband network users.

Ummi Suraya Shaharuddin; Ruhani Ab Rahman; Murizah Kassim; Mat Ikram Yusof

This paper presents an analysis performance of running multimedia applications on IPv4 compared to IPv6. As acknowledged, todays network faces an exhaustion of IPv4 addresses by Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) due to larger users need internet communication. Thus, migration from IPv4 to IPv6 is the main reason where some applications should be tested on its running performance on IPv6. This research shows an analyzed performance comparison with multimedia applications by using Dual Stack IPv4/IPv6 Technology. Network is simulated onGNS3 Simulator and real Cisco devices. Multimedia streaming from Host to Client scenario is set up and the streaming performance of both IPv4 and IPv6 protocol are compared and analyzed. Comprehensive quantifiers are used to measure the performance between the two protocols such as Round Trip Time (RTT), throughput traffic and byte loss. Two main multimedia applications protocols are tested which are Transfer Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) that runs on identified multimedia applications. Results present IPv6 is much better than IPv4 where, average RTT differences are less than 0.35secs. IPv6 FTP runs higher throughput by average of 4.65kbytes/sec and streaming time for tested video presents of 32% for IPv6 to stream faster than IPv4. This analysis can be as benchmark and guidance to proof that IPv6 is having a better performance compared to IPv4 based on the Dual Stack Hosts running with Multimedia applications.

Wan Mohd Nazmin Wan Mahmud; Ruhani Ab Rahman; Murizah Kassim; Mat Ikram Yusof

IPv6 is the next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) which designed to replace the current IPv4.The designed protocol is to manage the problem of insufficient IP address for online users. IPv6 is new technology, thus it is not matured and does it suits to the real online applications in any applied network. This paper evaluates the performance of End-to-End (E2E) IPv6 over wired and Wi-Fi broadband access compared with IPv4. Real network environment for Internet Service Provider (ISP) is set up to collect empirical and comprehensive data performance of Dual-Stack architecture. The Client-Server test-bed is simulated as E2E Dual-Stack IP implementation. Network performance is measured on Round Trip Time (RTT), File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Iperftest. All performance are tested with wired and Wi-Fi network. Result presents that Dual-Stack IP method is more reliable protocol to use in a real network environment where analysis presents that IPv6 has throughput higher and much better in transaction rate based on throughput and response time with RTT, FTP and Iperf analysis results than IPv4. This performance comparison presents that E2E network environments and equipment are now IPv6 ready that successfully with Dual-Stack IPv6 protocol method. In term of throughput performance, other ISPs may use this result as a benchmark to adopt IPv6 Dual-Stack method in their network.
